World of Warcraft: Legion: Druid guide

Our always updated overview of the Druid class in WOW Legion.

The Druid is considered to be the most versatile of World of Warcraft’s hybrid classes, having been proved to excel in any one of the roles in WoW’s trinity: healing, damage dealing, or tanking. In its current state the class can fit pretty much anyplay style, being the only hero in the game with the privilege of having four specs. For those who enjoy versatility and are not afraid of mastering several playstyles, the Druid is a solid choice, and this Druid guide will provide an overview of the class’s specialisations, detailing their strengths and weaknesses.

In Legion, Blizzard has further refined the position of the Druid as shapeshifting jack-of-all-trades, by allowing a Druid in one specialization to have some crossover abilities from another. This means that a Druid specialized in healing has the possibility to switch into damage dealing mode by shapeshifting into his or her cat form, and vice-versa.

As defenders of nature and ancient protectors of the world of Azeroth, the Druid class has a rich lore and are often at the forefront of any happenings that threaten the safety of Azeroth and its denizens. Malfurion Stormrage, one of the main characters from Warcraft III, is the Druid’s patron and will often interact with Druid players.

It's worth pointing out that Druids differ from other classes in two more key aspects: while they may use mounts, they have access to a travel form shapeshift, which gives them the ability to move at mount speed while slightly limiting their interactions. In addition to that, feral and guardian Druids spend most of their time in their animal form, so the cosmetic element of new loot is often not as satisfying as it is when playing another class.

As the expansion progresses, we’ll update this guide with all the information related to Druids and their four specialisations, so consider this your one stop for everything Druid related. Keep checking back as each patch drops, as we will frequently revise our content to bring you the best quality information.

On to the gameply itself. Below, you’ll find a description of each of the Druid specialisations, and some pointers about what you should expect when playing them.

Editor's Note: Update 2 - Our most recent update adds the much requested Guardian Druid guide. Learn how to embrace your inner bear and never have to wait another minute in the Looking for Dungeon tool. Our guide has no fluff, only the essencial principles that you need to know in order to do a great job tanking as a Druid - including talent choices, rotation advice, and cooldown usage! Check it out via the link in the appropriate section below.

Balance

The Balance specialisation was the recipient of one of the biggest overhauls in WOW Legion and its playstyle was streamlined a great deal in the process. The Balance Druid is now a very tough ranged caster that excels at damaging several enemies at once, while still being able to compete for the top damage spots in a single target fight.

- Balance Druid guide

Strengths
  • Multiple target fights.
  • Superior survivability.
Weakness
  • Low mobility.
  • Lack of damage-enhancing cooldowns to take advantage of vulnerability windows.

Feral Combat

The Feral Combat, often referred to as Cat Druid, is the class’s take on a Rogue. Just like Rogues, this type of Druid uses energy to power their attacks, gathering combo points to unleash powerful finishers - and they thrive on stealth too. The Feral Combat druid has some unique tricks of its own though, and is able to boost its damage considerably by calling on the powers of the wild.

This is currently one of the hardest specialisations to master, but also has the potential to be one of the best at damage dealing.

Strengths
  • Versatile, performs well in any kind of fight.
  • High mobility.
Weakness
  • Challenging rotation.
  • Needs some build up time on each target to achieve maximum damage.

Guardian

The Guardian (or Bear) Druid was the first non-Warrior class to be widely recognized and used as a tank in challenging end-game scenarios. Their playstyle is built around generating and spending Rage much like the Warrior, but instead of blocking and dodging attacks they rely on their huge health pool and high armour stat to shrug off hard-hitting blows. Consequently, Guardian Druids can survive blows no other tank can.

Guardian Druid guide

Strengths
  • Multiple defensive cooldowns allow them to survive long, complicated fights.
  • Great ability to self-heal and sustain themselves.
Weakness
  • Low threat generation means it's harder to keep enemies away from other players.
  • One of the hardest tanking styles to master.

Restoration

One of the game’s original healers, the Restoration specialisation excels in maintaining steady party or raid healing through their reliable healing-over-time spells, while also boasting Tranquility, one of the best panic buttons in the game.

Players that enjoy taking a support role and want to be challenged by keeping track of several ongoing spells should find this a good fit.

Restoration Druid guide

Strengths
  • Deals well with consistent, predictable damage.
  • Never runs out of mana.
Weakness
  • Apart from Tranquility, not a lot of ways to deal with large damage bursts.

Keep your eye on this page, as we will be updating it with everything related to the Druid class over the course of the expansion. In the meantime, check out the comments below and tell us what are your feelings about playing a Druid in WOW Legion.
