World of Warcraft: Legion: Hunter guide

Our always up-to-date overview of the Hunter class in the latest WOW expansion.

The Hunter is one of World of Warcraft’s classic damage-dealing classes. A master tracker and scout, the Hunter is at home in the wilds, and excels at harassing enemies while staying just out of their reach. Our Hunter guide will give you an overview of what to expect from the class as a whole and its three specialisations: Beast Mastery, Survival, and Marksmanship.

Hunters can deal ranged damage as lone wolves through their Marksmanship specialisation, or accompanied by a loyal pet when focusnig in Beast Mastery. Survival Hunters, on the other hand, fight side-by-side with their pets as melee skirmishers.

They rely on building up their unique resource, Focus, either passively or by using specialised attacks, and then using that Focus to fuel powerful shots or strikes. Their ability to wear mail armour, coupled with a good selection of abilities that help them dodge or misdirect enemy attacks, makes them a particularly resilient damage-dealing class.

Hunters are unique in that they can tame nearly any beast enemy in the game, even if they opt for a playstyle that doesn't rely on having a pet! They are, then, an especially interesting class for players that enjoy exploring less travelled areas and collecting new creatures.

They also tend to be a very mobile class, with few attacks requiring a stationary casting time. This makes them a good entry class for new players, or old players interested in diving into PvP content. This is even more true of the specialisations that use pets, who help take some of the heat away from the hero.

Keep checking this Hunter guide for all info related to the class, as we’re updating it regularly!

Editor's Note: Update #2 - We have just launched our Survival Hunter guide, 100%-ready for patch 7.1.5! We are very well aware that the Survival Hunter can be challenging to play and is in fact held in low regard by many players. We absolutely believe though that it has the potential for greatness when played properly, and have gone to great lengths to deliver a guide that demystifies it! Check it out through the link below.

Beast Mastery Hunter

The Beast Mastery Hunter is now the "classic" flavour of Hunter in World of Warcraft, and a ranged damage dealer that strikes using guns or bows, supported by a melee pet. Conveniently, the pet’s key attacks are activated through the Hunter’s ability bar, but micromanaging is still possible if a player chooses.

This specialisation currently shines when fighting multiple enemies, and has fast become a favourite for Mythic dungeon runs. It is also rather easy to pick up, and so is one of the best starting points for beginners.

- Beast Mastery Hunter guide

Strengths Excellent mobility. One of the best multi-target damage dealers in the game. Great for open-world content and beginner friendly too.
Weaknesses Unimpressive single-target damage.

Marksmanship Hunter

In a radical departure from the previous state of the specialisation, the new Legion Marksmanship Hunter encourages players to forfeit the pet entirely, focusing instead in mastering ranged weapons.

In gameplay terms, this translates to a spec that builds up vulnerabilities on targets through repeated attacks, before finishing them off with powerful shots. The Marksmanship Hunter is the focused, patient sniper counterpart to the machine-gun wielding Beast Mastery Hunter.

Marksmanship Hunter guide

Strengths One of the best specs for single-target fights. A top raiding specialisation.
Weaknesses Average mobility, due to the need to be static for Aimed Shot, which is one of the spec’s core abilities.

Other WOW guides:

Survival Hunter

The Survival Hunter reintroduces melee combat to the Hunter class, having the player fight side-by-side with their pet, tag-teaming the enemy and setting up powerful finishing blows.

Currently, the result here is a bit mixed. The playstyle is very challenging, and although it can be rewarding by itself it doesn't compare favourably with other melee classes in the game.

As it stands, this should more of a flavour choice for players that like the idea of meleeing close to their pets, rather than a practical endgame one. That said, a masterfully played Survival Hunter will never be a total liability!

Survival Hunter guide

Strengths Good single-target damage output. Great at exploiting vulnerability windows. Good open-world utility abilities.
Weaknesses Very challenging playstyle. Weak multiple-target capability.

The Hunter is one of the old favourites from Classic World of Warcraft, and a class that has always had a lot of fans. Are you one of them? Let us know in the comments, and keep checking back for constantly updated Hunter goodness!
