About Ed Thorn

Ed's a huge fan of rushing B in CS:GO and grinding it out in Destiny 2. He will not rest until a new Wario Land is announced.

This PUBG guide explains how to land faster in the game and land on the map more quickly than your opponents.

Given that the aim of PUBG is to emerge as the last person standing, you’ll want to get hold of every little advantage that you can, and do so as quickly as possible. While it's easy to associate the ultimate Chicken Dinner objective with aiming, shooting, positioning and the like, it’s easy to forget that each match - and your first decision - starts in the plane.

Everyone starts off on an equal footing, sporting no equipment while flying over an expansive map. That map of course is filled to the brim with gear that’s tailor made for obliterating your fellow passengers travelling on the plane. The only snag is, they're all thinking the same...

For that reason it’s essential that you get off to a flying start (quite literally) and get to the best weaponry before someone else inevitably does. There’s no walkthrough or handy tooltip telling you how to soar through the air faster, and we’ve lost count of the myths surrounding fast landings. For that reason, we've put together a guide that will help you hit the ground running before everyone else.

We’ve based this guide off both YouTuber zomgmoz and WackyJacky101's video walkthroughs that illustrate how to land much faster in PUBG. Do make sure you give it a watch and a thumbs up!

Make sure you visit our core PUBG Guide hub when you're done here. It contains all of the most important tips and tactics you need to win more games.

When you’re in the plane

First of all, you’ll need to select where you want to land by opening up your map and placing a marker straight away. Don’t underestimate the importance of doing this as it’s the first crucial step to landing faster than everyone else.

Let's say for example that we've chosen School as our location of choice, and the plane is flying near enough to it that we can be confident of a solid landing.

Next you’ll want to keep an eye on your compass, and the plane’s location as it flies perpendicular to School. This represents the minimum distance to travel to your chosen destination.

Essentially, once the marker aligns with the center of the compass, this is the point at which you’ll want to eject from the plane.

Once you’re in the air

Now that you’re soaring through the sky, bring up the map and look at your position in relation to your landing spot. This will help you get your bearings.

Fly horizontally until you’re around 3 squares away from your chosen location and the start immediately nose-diving by pressing the [W], or by pressing the thumbstick upwards. It’s important that you don’t release your parachute early here, just start heading down and focus on the technique we'll illustrate in the section below. Don't worry, you won't come to a sticky end at the hands of terra firma.

The descent (Wave Technique)

When you’re descending from the sky, you want to avoid spiralling around in a circle as much as you can as this will slow you down. Instead, simply head downwards in a straight line towards your location by pressing the [W] Key or holding the left thumbstick forwards.

What you'll want to do is move your mouse or right thumb stick upwards periodically to slow your velocity, before moving it back to the downwards position to re-engage your pin-drop descent. You will want to repeat this process around 2-3 times before you reach your destination for the fastest landing possible.

Here's a quick recap of what you'll need to do for a faster landing:

  • As you fall, always hold down your [W] key or left thumbstick.
  • Position your mouse or right thumbstick so you're facing the location you want to land in.
  • Move your mouse or right thumbstick upwards to slow your fall briefly, before quickly moving it back to the downwards position again.
  • Repeat this process around 3 times before your parachute releases.

It might seem counter intuitive, but it works. This is because you're not travelling at a constant speed with a fixed angle. With the Wave Technique you'll achieve a much faster vertical velocity over 2-3 intervals which'll make you hit the ground running faster than everyone else!
