How to achieve the best FPS settings to boost performance in PUBG.

At this by point it's really not news to say that PUBG is a rather poorly optimised game, regardless of whether you're playing on Xbox One or on the game's original PC home. Although we've seen incremental improvements to the game over time, it feels like there's a long way to go before we get to enjoy the kind of velvety-smooth gameplay we really want.

These optimisation problems go hand in hand with some frustrating glitches and desktop crashes too, and it can sometimes feel as though you're not only fighting 99 other rabid players, but also the game client itself! Even quite hefty rigs can struggle to deliver and maintain a solid 60 frames per second here

Fortunately, there are some measures you can take to improve performance on PC in particular. The more effort you're prepared to put in fiddling around with the many in-game options that exist, the greater the returns you'll see. Given how much effort you put into winning over all those hundreds and hundreds of matches, it's worth investing a little bit of time tinkering under the hood of the game for a little extra advantage.

Although finding that magical sweet-spot of optimal settings first-time around isn't easy, it's well worth making this effort. To take some of the sting out of this process, we've compiled a comprehensive guide to playing around with your settings until they're just right, and nicely optimised to achieve the best possible FPS in PUBG.

Best FPS settings

Graphics Options

These are easily the most important settings you'll be changing. Make sure you tweak these first before you mess around with anything else!

  • Screen Scale: 100-103
  • Anti-Aliasing: High
  • Post-Processing: Very Low
  • Shadows: Very Low
  • Textures: High
  • Effects: Very Low
  • Foliage: Very Low
  • View Distance: Very Low
  • V-Sync: Off
  • Motion Blur: Off

Post-Processing, Shadows, Effects and Foliage simply aren't needed at high settings as they're more for show than anything else. Setting them all to Very Low will save you some serious FPS.

You're probably wondering why View Distance is set to Very Low as well. Setting this to High or above doesn't actually give you a distinct advantage as it only governs how much detail is rendered at a distance, such as foliage and objects. Other players will still be visible at long ranges no matter whether you have this set to Ultra or Very Low.

Anti-Aliasing affects how jagged textures appear on the screen. Setting this to High or above will make everything in general look a bit smoother. You can set this to Medium or below to save a few extra frames, but expect things to appear jankier.

Set your Textures based on how powerful your PC is, but it's nice to keep it on High or Medium so the game doesn't look awful.

Turn V-Sync on and it'll match your game's frame rate to the refresh rate of your monitor in an attempt to reduce less than appealing screen-tearing. Trouble is, it'll reduce your FPS quite hard as screen-tearing only occurs when you're getting FPS well above the refresh rate of your monitor. With this in mind it's better to keep it turned off for maximum FPS.

Motion Blur only makes things a little bit prettier and makes action more cinematic. Unfortunately it tanks performance pretty hard, so turn it off to save yourself some hefty FPS.

Gameplay Options

Changing this to Off will stop the game from loading a 3D model of your character when opening up your inventory. It's completely unnecessary, so it's worth turning this off just to boost your inventory loading speeds. Every little counts when it comes to staying tuned into the game after all.

  • Inventory Character Render: Off

NVIDIA Settings

If you've got an NVIDIA Graphics Card you can gain a slight performance boost by heading into your NVIDIA Control Panel and tweaking a few settings. While this method won't give you enormous FPS gains, it's still worth doing!

Just follow this simple step by step guide:

  • Click the arrow in the bottom right of your desktop tray to bring up an icon menu. Right click the Nvidia logo (green and black) and select "NVIDIA Control Panel".
  • Select "Manage 3D Settings" followed by "Program Settings" and find "PUBG" or "TslGame" in the drop down menu. If you can't find them, click "Add" and you should find them there.
  • Set "Maximum pre-rendered frames" to 1.
  • Set "Monitor Technology" to "G-SYNC" if applicable. Otherwise leave it be.
  • Set "Power management mode" to "Prefer maximum performance".
  • Set "Preferred refresh rate" to "Highest Available".
  • Set "Threaded Optimisation" to "On".
  • Set "Vertical Sync" to "Use the 3D application setting".

PUBG PC System Requirements

It's also worth knowing if your rig is capable of keeping up with PUBG's recommended and minimum specs as this'll determine whether you can crank some settings up, or leave them nice and low.

Below we've listed both the recommended and minimum specs so you can check where your PC's at when it comes to running PUBG.

As a final side note, if you're aiming to run PUBG at the highest possible settings, you'll need an exceptionally powerful system. We're talking some real top end components to reach the heights of 60 FPS and beyond. This game's hardly the most optimised!

Minimum Specs

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-4430 / AMD FX-6300
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2GB / AMD Radeon R7 370 2GB
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 30 GB available space

Recommended Specs

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-6600K / AMD Ryzen 5 1600
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB / AMD Radeon RX 580 4GB
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 30 GB available space

General PC Settings

Out of date drivers can play havoc with your FPS and render PUBG (and all other games if we're honest) practically unplayable. Asa a general rule of thumb it's important to keep them updated.

As PUBG progresses with each major patch, we’ll make sure to keep updating this guide for those of you who are determined to chase ever-improving optimal performance from PUBG.
