Dafran retires from Overwatch League and will return to streaming

It seems as though it's for good this time.

Daniel “dafran” Francesca has announced his retirement from the Overwatch League so as to return to streaming.

Although he’ll be leaving the Atlanta Reign competitive setup, he’ll begin streaming under the Atlanta Reign brand and promises “more, longer and consistent streams” and an “EU streaming schedule”. He's confirmed that Overwatch will still be his main game, but “more variety” will be included too.

This isn’t the first time Dafran’s announced his departure from the competitive scene, however. He joined Atlanta Reign’s roster back in October of last year, before abruptly ending his contract with them a month later saying that he wanted nothing to do with Overwatch anymore.

”The end. I hate the game.” dafran tweeted in November. “Thought I could love it again and have passion but it’s impossible, I always end up soft throwing. Contract ended, Overwatch uninstalled, Mcdonalds here I come.”

Two days later, dafran backtracks entirely.

”Still in ATL Reign, didn’t quit like I said. I messed up, don’t know what to say except sorry to the community, my fans and ATL. It wasn’t jebait, sometimes I have these days and make dumb mistakes. Going forward I’m going to stream less and focus on making myself and my team better.”

Dafran’s long been something of a controversial character in Overwatch, having been hit with a suspension in 2017 by Blizzard - along with his Overwatch Contenders team Selfless - for intentionally griefing and throwing matches, as well as streaming anime game “nekopara” (NSFW) on his channel.

In response to this controversy, he published a less-than apologetic note, followed by a more resigned message once the ban-hammer came down.

Despite his rocky past, it’s clear that dafran has matured a great deal and is leaving Atlanta Reign on much better terms than before.

”Hey, at least we are leaving maturely and gracefully after finishing stage 1, unlike the throw4dafran nekopara selfless incident”.

He goes on to thank Atlanta Reign for the opportunity and believes that being a part of the Overwatch League was one of the “best experiences” of his life and that it’s “something to really look up to and strive for”.
