About Ed Thorn

Ed joined Metabomb in May 2017 and puts together many guides across the site.

Our essential Overwatch hero tier list for Season 13 (November 2018) breaks down the entire roster of characters into their most competitive brackets, with massive guides for each one as well!

As Season 13 is just kicking off, expect this tier list to change somewhat as the weeks go by! We've tried our best to represent the meta, but don't take our tier list as definitive. The meta's in a pretty balanced place right now, meaning many heroes are still viable, even if they aren't topping our list.

We've all got our favourite characters in Overwatch, and although some of them can sometimes appear on paper to be a bit more powerful than others, we take a pretty clear position when it comes to appraising them. All in all we think Blizzard has done an impressive job of crafting a roster of characters which are not only wonderfully distinct from one another, but also pretty well balanced as a collection. The Overwatch team hasn't been shy to introduce buffs and nerfs as and when they've been required, and we only expect the game's tuning to get tighter over time

With all this said and done though, it's fair to say that some heroes prove more consistently useful than others when it comes to contributing to a wide variety of team compositions. As a result, we like to provide a regularly updated snapshot of how the heroes stack up against one another, and do so in the form of the tier list you're reading now.

How exactly have we gone about compiling our list though? For a start, we take our own experience with the current meta into consideration, before factoring in the generally accepted wisdom of the crowd via alternative hero ratings. We also lean somewhat in our rankings towards playing with other random players, rather than team builds favoured by tightly coordinated competitive teams.

All things being equal this list will guide you towards making a solid choice within each category. Having said that, we encourage you to play the characters you enjoy and excel at above all else, and at the same time try to work around the hero picks of your teammates - even if you disagree.

Editor's Note: November Update

Season 13 Overview

It's difficult to make any definitive statements, but here's a snapshot of the heroes who are already beginning to have an impact in the competitive mix:

Special thanks Overwatch Central's video which also proved to be a valuable resource when it came to getting a handy overview of who's strong in the meta right now.

  • Ashe - We're not placing Ashe anywhere in our tier list right now as she won't be out in competitive for a while yet. From what we've played of her, we imagine she'll be an extremely popular pick and it's clear that the community thinks likewise too. We've heard she pairs up exceptionally well with Mercy thanks to her damage boost, and if you can land those all important headshots you'll be a devastating addition to any team.
  • Torbjorn - We've not moved Torbjorn in our tier list just yet as we're waiting on his changes to go live in-game and to see how his newfound form fares in competitive mode. It's clear that he's emerged much stronger now that the focus is less on his turret, and more on him. Potentially a very strong pick - who would've thought?!
  • Roadhog - Again, another hero who we're not budging up our tier list just yet. Changes to the spread on his Scrap Gun and the way his Chain Hook handles should make him a much stronger pick than he is currently. There have been rumblings that a return of the "Flank Hog" could be approaching, so we'll keep an eye on the meta to see if he turns out to be the menace many are saying he could be.
  • Genji + Tracer - Both very strong picks - in the right hands. Genji's one of the most picked DPS heroes right now and incredibly potent if the person behind the keyboard has their mechanics on point.
  • Hanzo + Junkrat - These heroes don't control the meta anymore, but that doesn't mean they aren't strong. Both of them still excel in certain situations and particular maps. Junkrat's great at destroying tanks and holding down chokepoints, while Hanzo's an excellent sniper who's capable of causing the enemy team a real headache.
  • Reinhardt - At the very start of Season 12 Reinhardt looked like he was on a slight decline, but that's definitely not the case. He's still by far the most popular tank in the game right now and that's likely thanks to Ana's rise up the ranks too.
  • Ana - Ana's definitely the strongest support in the game right now and her pick rate's soared since her round of buffs at the start of the season. We've always been a fan of her and that's down to her kit presenting solutions to every kind of problem. An absolute must-pick right now.
  • Moira - A staple of Season 10 and a hero that dropped in popularity a little throughout Season 11. As dive heroes are slowly coming out of hibernation, she's beginning to gain more traction as she's capable of decent healing, damage dealing and most importantly, she's able to duck out of a sticky situation when pounced on.
  • D.Va - D.Va's still a decent pick as she's a brilliant all-rounder, able to hoover up any damage sources with her Defense Matrix and zoom around the map harassing the enemy. We've bumped her up to Tier 1 as she's a staple of the game right now.
  • Winston - Winston's proof that the dive comp can work, but you've got to be a tightly coordinated team to pull it off. He's not up there with the likes of Reinhardt, Zarya or D.Va but if you've got a gameplan in mind which requires a particular set of "divey" tools, then it's well worth switching to him.
  • Doomfist - Not as bad as his lowly pickrate belies. He's ridiculously strong all things considered, and that's down to his crazy mobility, tankiness and ability to be used for anti-dive/backline protection alongside brawly team compositions.
  • Wrecking Ball He's a strong dive presence in the right hands, but he's easily countered by heroes that have CC abilities. Heroes like Winston and D.Va are far more capable of hopping in and out and being disruptive with their shields and damage negation abilities. Wrecking Ball relies too heavily on Piledriver, which if missed, can leave you and your team in an vulnerable spot.
  • Mercy - Still a strong pick, but Ana and Moira are more common place right now.
  • Lucio - Certainly capable of keeping your team topped up in the thick of a team fight, and a great dive comp enabler. He's not the strongest Support hero out there right now, but he's a solid pick if Ana or Moira isn't working out and you need a hero to do some basic healing groundwork.

Overwatch hero ranking and ratings

Here's our Season 13 tier list snapshot, updated for the month of November.

These listings are by no means definitive, especially as the meta's pretty balanced at the moment with a vast number of heroes being viable in the right situations!

Tier 1

Reinhardt [Tank]

Reinhardt’s back in a big way and his pick rate is currently through the roof at all levels of play. It’s all thanks to his huge barrier that can protect an entire backline, as well as the devastating potential of a correctly timed Earthshatter. He can hold a team together and simultaneously crush an opposing one in a matter of seconds.

Let’s not forget that he’s got great synergy with the likes of Brigitte and Zarya who’ve also seen a rise in popularity too. Their ability to chuck armour and shields his way makes him an even stronger defensive force on the battlefield.

Zarya [Tank]

Zarya’s another tank who’s seen a rise in popularity once again and that’s down to the fact that she compliments Reinhardt and Brigitte so nicely. Her bubble shield can soak up damage from meta heroes like Hanzo and Junkrat, which feeds her energy bar really quickly and builds her strong Ultimate ability.

Zarya’s Ultimate also combos well with Hanzo’s Dragonstrike, Reinhardt’s Earthshatter and many more besides. She’s a super flexible pick who’s able to wrench her allies out of danger while increasing her power at the same time.

Ana [Support]

After a round of buffs, Ana's back in business. Her kit's absolutely spot on for almost every situation and she's more than capable of holding her own when it comes to topping up some of the beefiest health bars in the game. Welcome back old friend.

Moira [Support]

Moira did have a little dip in pick rate, but she's definitely made a big comeback. She's great in all departments, but it's her ability to do it all that makes her so strong. Healing? Check. Damage dealing? Check. Able to get herself out of a sticky situation at the press of a button? Check.

Doomfist [Offense]

Doomfist’s very strong in the right hands, able to blitz around the battlefield and one-shot opponents with a huge punch. Get over-zealous though, and you’ll be left completely stranded. He’s pretty unforgiving in this regard and unless you’ve poured quite a few hours into him, prepare to put yourself out of position over and over again. He’s got game-changing power, so pour some hours into mastering him and you could be the key difference-maker in many a match.

Tier 2

D.Va [Tank]

D.Va's still a formidable force on the battlefield and that's down to her great all-rounder style. She's got insane mobility, negates ultimates and can harass the backline with ease. There's almost always a slot in the composition for D.Va to fit into and that says volumes about how much of an asset her kit can bring to a team.

Winston [Tank]

Winston one occupied the very highest spot on our tier list during "The Age of the Dive Meta". He's definitely not what he once was, but he's certainly still a strong pick that'll head up a dive composition just fine.

Hanzo [Defense]

Hanzo’s got fantastic mobility, coupled with the ability to one-shot a multitude of heroes and it’s extremely difficult to play against a Hanzo who’s landing all their shots and scurrying all over the map.

Junkrat [Defense]

Junkrat’s still holding strong in the DPS role thanks to his immense burst damage that’s perfect for breaking shields and shutting down the frontline. Much like Hanzo, he’s remarkably agile and players can really struggle to deal with his constant barrage of bombs.

Brigitte [Support]

Brigitte’s burst onto the competitive scene and she’s a common sight in 90% of our matches. She’s not really much of a healer, but she functions amazingly well as an off-tank who provides some additional frontline presence as well as the ability to armour up her allies.

On top of all this, she synergises well with many shield-based heroes, and can switch from being defensive to stunning an enemy down in the blink of an eye. The utility she provides is exceptional and it’s no wonder she occupies the upper echelons of our Overwatch tier list right now.

Mercy [Support]

Mercy's hardly fallen from grace since her nerf a little while back. Although she's not the invulnerable healing menace that she once was, many players in all tiers are still playing her, and for good reason too. Strong, reliable single-target healing and an Ultimate ability that gives her serious survivability while keeping teammates topped up? She's going to be sticking around for a while.

Zenyatta [Support]

Zenyatta's a key pick for dive compositions and is often a perfect counter and compliment to whatever's strong in the meta. His Transcendence is capable of negating damage, and his Discord and Healing Orbs are great for both removing vulnerable targets and ensuring allies are kept in the green.

Tier 3

Lucio [Support]

In solid hands Lucio can shine as brightly in a random team as he does in truly collaborative pre-made efforts, and although he doesn't have a huge amount of health to play with - and his weapon projectiles are rather wobbly to deliver - his exceptional versatility, flexibility and ability to sustain his teammates and rush them back into action makes him a strong pick for any team.

We recognise that he's a solid pick, but we've placed him mid tier as there are some stronger options out there in terms of Support heroes right now.

Genji [Offense]

Genji’s skillset revolves around harassing enemies with Shurikens and closing down vulnerable targets. Shields and armour make his job much harder, especially as many enemies in the meta are now able to stun or burst him down in seconds.

If you can skillfully blend his amazing mobility skills and precision aiming together though, consider placing him a tier higher than he currently is. More than most heroes, how Genji is ranked by anyone is determined largely by your own ability at playing him. Just be warned that it's now a really tough gig...

Pharah [Offense]

Pharah’s another hero who’s seen a steady increase in pick rate throughout Season 11 and for much the same reasons as the ascendency of both Hanzo and Junkrat. She’s mobile, deals high burst damage and pairs up nicely with all the other meta heroes. Tag team her with Mercy and you’ve got a classic combination that forces the enemy into re-thinking their team composition just to deal with you.

Pharah gets weaker as you climb tiers and Widowmakers with sharp aim crawl out of the woodwork though, so that's why we've placed her mid-tier.

McCree [Offense]

We really enjoy McCree's point and click style. This hero comes with a caveat, however, in that you'll need quick reactions to succeed in just about any of the many duels you're likely to find yourself in. If you're clumsy with your shots, consider McCree a much lower pick. Having said that, his Flashbang grenade ability is amazing for locking down a squishy kill, and anyone who manages to master this hero can expect to make a serious difference to a team's performance on any given map or game mode. Put simply, if you expect lots of close-quarters combat, McCree is an exceptionally potent force on the battlefield.

Tracer [Offense]

Tracer's similar to Genji in nearly every respect. She's a phenomenal flanker who's capable of terrorising the enemy backline or gradually whittling down tank health bars - but only in the right hands. She's so mechanically intensive that this pick may not work in your favour.

Unless you’re extremely good, you’re likely to do no more than be a nuisance.

Wrecking Ball

We're not completely sold on Wrecking Ball. He's got some great utility, but he's only a decent pick if you're playing in a tightly coordinated team. Otherwise, we've found he's difficult to play with and around, especially as he zips around the map doing his own thing.

All in all, D.Va's just a better all-round pick who can still fulfill the same role as Wrecking Ball without potentially throwing the team into disarray.

Widowmaker [Defense]

An extremely accomplished Widowmaker player can cause the enemy team a huge number of headaches, but played strictly solo she can be a somewhat fiddly and fragile character to dominate with. When she's fully zoomed in on the action at hand, she's extremely vulnerable to being eliminated by a flanking aggressor and with no guaranteed protection from a teammate she can be taken out of combat pretty quickly.

Those who don't excel at this particular niche will find her a tricky hero to make any real impact with though.

More great Overwatch guides:

Tier 4

Mei [Defense]

Not only does Mei have a whole truckload of annoying crowd-control abilities to frustrate the enemy team with, she can also summon down a massive wall of ice that provides a super-annoying barricade for your future victims to have to deal with. Her excellent, immobilising Ultimate ability does require you to have a team who are savvy enough to capitalise on the opportunity though, so she's by no means a first pick if you're queuing up for a match with randoms. In a well-organised team, however, she can be a bit of a menace for the opposition to deal with. Expect your teammates to roll your eyes a bit when you choose her though.

Reaper [Offense]

A few seasons ago we'd bumped Reaper up towards the top echelons of our tier list. His new life-stealing passive took him to new heights, but right now, he's fallen by the wayside a little. There's an inherent clunkiness to his playstyle that means he can't keep up with all the mobility currently in the game. We sense a rework on the cards if he's ever to make an impact again.

Soldier: 76 [Offense]

It's a little tempting at first glance to think that Soldier: 76 is just another boring run-and-gun hero - and it's no accident that he's the first character you encounter during the game's tutorial - and yet there's plenty of mastery to be had here despite this surface simplicity. His DPS is very strong, his Sprint ability allows him to get back into the thick of battle nice and quickly, and that group heal can often mean the difference between victory or a rather embarrassing group wipe. He's a solid all-rounder really, and one that shines in skilled hands.

Having said all this, there's a better DPS for almost every situation currently (Hanzo for burst, Genji for flanking) and that's why he's in the lower rungs of this tier list.

Orisa [Tank]

Ever since she launched, Orisa's struggled to break out of a mid-table position. That came to an end in Season 8 as her ability to constantly throw down shields and hold the frontline began to see the light of day. Now with Season 13 under way she’s slipped down the rankings, and that’s down to the fact she’s only worth picking in very specific situations and scenarios.

Roadhog [Tank]

Roadhog's not really in the best state currently, but a recent PTR change could bring him back to the top. We'll update his positioning once we know more!

Tier 5

Bastion [Defense]

Bastion has languished at the bottom of the heap for far too long since his glory days in the beta, when everything he touched turned to pixellated dust. He was nerfed a little too hard for our liking back then, and a round of post-launch buffs haven't had nearly as much of an impact as he needed. He has his situational strengths when defending, but he still doesn't feel like the finished article to us.

Bastion’s always languished at the bottom of the pile, only seeing glimpses of glory when played as a “troll” pick or something that might throw the enemy off if you’ve tried absolutely every tactic and still nothing’s worked.

Bastion’s got some situational strengths, but he’s a linear hero who’s easily countered and only effective in niche scenarios.

Torbjorn [Defense]

Torbjorn's been completely updated and rumour has it that he's really strong right now. We'll have to see how this translates into the metagame once he's unlocked for competitive matchmaking.

Sombra [Offense]

For a time it was hard to tell whether Sombra was hideously under or overpowered in the metagame - and it depended very much on the skill level of any given player. She's another highly situational character who can make a big difference in certain circumstances, but she's a tough pick to make an argument for from the get-go.

Symmetra [Offense]

Symmetra's rework has been huge and when you look at her new kit on paper, it certainly gives off the impression that she'll now have a big impact on the competitive scene. Unfortunately this isn't the case.

She's still a niche hero with damaging abilities that really don't match up to the likes of Genji, Tracer or even Doomfist. She lacks their mobility and "punch" when it comes to harassing opponents or pulling off an explosive combination of moves that'll eliminate enemies in a split second.

She'll need a buff or two to see any sort play, but in the right hands she can at least have some impact.

    @DirtyJoe Hi there!

First off, thanks so much for this comment. Means a lot to us that you've stuck around for so long, and all the stuff you've mentioned is a great help!
It can be tricky putting together a tier list every month, especially if we've not had a chance to pour as much time into the game as we'd like. That's why we really appreciate comments like yours.
We'll make some adjustments to our tier list with the feedback you've given us, and we'll do our utmost to keep this page updated when the rework fiesta + Ashe has happened.
    Thanks again!

Hey, I just want to start by saying that I've been following this list for a VERY long time and it has always been the best out there without a doubt. I only just made an account in order to make this comment.

There are four characters which I believe should be moved down just one tier. These being D.Va, Mercy, Moira, and Junkrat. I think as you go higher in rank and there is better team coordination Moira and Junkrat become less effective when compared with other picks. Mercy just isn't very good at all right now, and it's even arguable that Lucio is a stronger pick. Also The Zarya/Rein tank combo is the most used and strongest at the moment so I don't quite understand why D.Va would be higher than Zarya.

It seems to me that D.Va and Moira have been put in tier 1 on this list in order to have the heroes more spread to keep the list looking "pretty". But I would argue that Ana and Rein really are that strong right now that they are THE god tier and you shouldn't worry about how the list looks. It makes sense that tier 3 would have the most characters in it anyway, as it is a (mostly) balanced game.

I think that MAYBE Doomfist and Brigitte should be in tier 1. However with the Torb rework, the coming hero changes, and addition of Ashe to the game, who knows what will happen to the meta? I thank you for your fine work!

@iris12229 Thanks for this really detailed reply and analysis, honestly, it's been extremely helpful!
We've been struggling to keep up with the meta lately due to various circumstances and comments like these are just what we need to get caught up with things.
We've also dropped you a shout out in the tier list itself and done our best to rejig the standings so that all the heroes are now more accurately ranked.

Brigitte was tier 1 at release, but after the nerf and the meta change in general, she is still tier 2, but her lack of consistent healing means she only works in specific comps (or as a counterpick to dive). I would not place her above Zenyatta necessarily.

Pharah is tier 3 at the highest (not tier 2). Very useful in niche situations, and as a counterpick, but gets weaker as the tiers get higher and Widowmakers can aim better.

Soldier is not tier 2 (maybe tier 4). Maybe in Bronze/Silver/Gold he is high-tier. But the problem is that there is a better DPS for every situation (i.e. Hanzo for burst damage or Tracer/Genji for mobility/flanking). Soldier gets mauled in the frontline and dived in the backline. And he can't contest snipers.

Reaper is low tier - not mid-tier. There is a better DPS for every situation. He has a big hitbox, moves slowly for a flanker and unlike other flankers, must be extremely close to deal any damage. He also has one of the easist to counter Ultimates in the game.

DVa at tier 3 is underrated. While comps are more static and Brigitte exists, she still is often used as the the 3rd tank to round out the triple tank line-up with some mobility, burst damage and damage negation. She negates ultimates or at least limits where/when they can be positioned - even at the pro level.

Doomfist is not low tier - in fact he's stronger than most of the DPS heroes ranked above him. He has a low pickrate due to his very high learning curve, but he is arguably the best flanker in the game due to his superb mobility, tankiness, ability to be used for anti-dive/backline protection and ability to be played in brawly comps with his team. The ammount of combos at his disposal is insane, alongside an Ultimate that saves his life, nets him a kill, restores a portion of his health, gives him great mobility, zones the enemy team out and prepares him for his next dive.

Hammond is not as bad as people say, but ranking him higher than Orisa, Roadhog and Winston is a stretch when we haven't seen him perform much yet. The tanks are mostly in a balanced postion at the moment. Winston is arguably a superior dive-tank to Hammond due to much quicker mobility when diving and, of course, being a shield tank that disrupts the sightlines of DPS/snipers.

I do agree with the majority of choices on this list. Sombra has been seen in high level play a lot recently, but she still requires teamwork that most people will never find to make her as good as other DPS. On certain maps, Bastion is very strong, but in general I would agree with the bottom tier.

Widowmaker as mid-tier is a tough call because the variance between a casual, mid-level and pro Widow are vast.

@Phosphophyllite Hi there. Thanks for taking the time to sign up and give such detailed feedback. I think you've hit the nail on the head with some of this stuff in terms of timing. With regards to Brigitte / Hanzo we've made some notes just above the tier list which explains some of the current thinking. This should be fixed in the next update which will likely take place tomorrow.

We have a very general, wide-reaching audience for Overwatch, sitting at many places in terms of ranking. For that reason we have to strike a tricky balance between what's useful advice for people of different capabilities and playstyles - solo queue, pre-made and so on.

We do have an article on the best heroes for beginners, and so I agree the focus should probably be more on the hero's position in the meta independent of mechanical difficulty. We'll have a think about how best to handle that in time for the next update and having your feedback is very useful.

I'm actually on holiday now until next week, so apologies for the delay in getting back to you on any replies to this.

So this comes up first when I search "Overwatch tier list" on google. Seems like you released it a day after it became outdated (Brigitte being released in competitive on April 30th and all). I guess if you're putting these out on a monthly basis it's a case of unfortunate timing.

Some feedback, I think it would be helpful if - in your hero blurbs - you more consistently included some notes about what the characters match up well with/against and why that warrants their ranking. I'm not here to tell you which hero should be ranked where; I'm not your target audience. That being said, if you're giving Zenyatta a t2 rating because you feel he matches up well against Tracer and Genji it only makes sense to ask yourself why you consider countering Genji and Tracer so important. If other players at your reader's rank are playing those characters well enough that they need to be countered, why assume your reader is incapable of doing so?

This begs the question; Is the goal of your piece to give your reader some ideas for characters that are easy to pick up? Is it a tier list at all? Or should it be titled "Top 26 Overwatch Heroes That Are Immediately Rewarding To Play?" Right now it seems like you're trying to do both and I think ultimately you could be getting two good articles out of this research instead of one misleading one. The purpose of a competitive tier list is not to put warning labels on Tracer and Widowmaker because they require aiming mechanics (if your readers never practice their aim, it will never improve). However, a list of suggestions for easy heroes to learn would be a great place for those words of caution.

I see in your most recent edit that a revamp of this list is forthcoming and with the meta comp being more or less set-in-stone it should be relatively easy to rank. I hope you consider including explanations of why the Zarya/Hanzo ult combo is so valuable in a healing heavy meta, and how Mercy's damage boost interacts with spirit dragon vs a defensive transcendence. Congrats on being the top result on google search. Keep it up, the community is counting on you.

Hey which base do you use to build this meta game? If you look a little to overwatch league first season your ranking is false. The maps have a bigger impact on heroes pick. Mercy is quite always played and Lucio not often. Tracer genji pharah and widow see a lot of plays. Junkrat too in defense. Roadhog is sometime played.

In fact there is no real meta game. It depends of the maps. If you really want one. Maybe tier 1 should be : dva mercy tracer monkey zenya

This tier list is pretty bad. Lucio is a much worse pick then zenyatta right now. Look at pro pickrate and look at high elo streamers. Mercy + zenyatta is run in almost every game. Transcendence > sound barrier, discord is very strong, and you can harmony orb your mercy to keep her alive. You put lucio in tier 1 and zenyatta in tier 2. Another issue is reinhardt and zarya being above orisa. Many high elo streamers say picking reinhardt is throwing when you can pick Orisa. People like eviltoaster have said that right now orisa is better in every way compared to reinhardt. There are very few exceptions to this (like last point numbani). You can never win the shield war with reinhardt because reinhardt cant shoot and shield at the same time. Reinhardt also heavily relies on lucio being meta, which he isn't right now. Roadhog is better than zarya right now. This is because reinhardt is very bad and roadhog pairs much better with Orisa.

    Simply put.

    Characters that were overrated:
    Lucio
    Ana
Moira (terrible with dive and bad defensive ult)
    Reinhardt
    Mei

    Characters that were underrated:
    Zenyatta
    Roadhog
    Orisa
    Widowmaker
    Tracer

i'm sorry, but I don't agree with the majority of this. Lucio hasn't been in god tier since season... was it 5? I don't remember cause it's been so long. How is genji in tier 3 because of his high skill cap, but widow is in tier 5 for the same reason? Also, don't even think that I haven't noticed that you have had the same notes for every hero. It hasn't changed at all. This could be coming from a salty Symmetra/Ana main, but this list is very off.

This tier list isn't accurate at all. While Winston, Soldier, Reaper, Junkrat and Ana are ranked way too high, moving them down would just mess up the whole tier list. I'd recommend checking for other tier lists.

Are you guys kidding? Widowmaker T5? She's T2 at least. Even if she gets flanked her hook has an extremely low cooldown now. And that's why widow mines exist, to warn you if anyone is flanking. And now you can even see them through walls after they get hit by the mine.

No, they're clustered in tiers by hero type, then sorted alphabetically within those categories. I don't think it's to anyone's benefit to be more granular than that.

Hi folks. Please read through the update note on this article for details of how we plan to update our tier list over the course of the month.

The Bastion changes are huge - and there are plenty of other tweaks too - but it will take time for a clear consensus to emerge of how things really stack up.

We plan to update our tier list on a weekly update for the month of March. We'll use your feedback to refine it further.

Just to preempt any post-patch rage that may be brewing in your fingertips, we'll be updating this tier list again at the start of February.

Allowing a week of live play seems like the bare minimum of good sense before making any drastic changes, or claiming the sky is falling in for any one hero.

Hey folks, just a quick update to highlight the update I'm about to put in the article...

I'll obviously be updating this tier list in the very near future to take into account the changes that have just gone live with the new patch.

That's not going to happen immediately though, as I want to wait until there's a better picture of what the impact of those changes are. I try to avoid kneejerk reactions to updates if at all possible, as it benefits no-one and immediate perceptions can be extremely misleading.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on how you're finding things though.

I think D.Va is a lot better then she was placed. (Probably Main Bias), but still she can destroy anything with her Defense Matrix and has a fly! I Think she should be like a tier 2 or 3 because 2nd to worst is not where she belongs.

@KFrench Saying Diva is played in almost every match at the gold/plat level doesn't really mean much. I'm sure bastion is played in almost every match at the bronze level, doesn't mean he's good though.

@KFrench Mei is really only good on 2CP defense, Reaper and McCree are just better all round then Junkrat, and Winston does everything d.va does (mobility, harassment) better then d.va, and if your playing her for the shield, just use Reinhardt. All the heroes you listed just have better High Tier alternatives. That being said, Mei can be useful, and d.va was Top Tier at one point, but the game moved on from her. Junkrat can be useful below diamond, where players aren't too good at dodging, though.

@KFrench All I'll say is that the last time we published this tier list (barely a fortnight ago and there being barely a single difference between the two versions) people screamed blue murder that the opposite of what you're suggesting is true, and that it was too reflective of the general playerbase. Read into all of this whatever you will.

This tier list is terrible. Mei is tier 2 at the absolute worst right now and Diva is played in almost every match in the gold/plat level. Junkrat has one of the craziest winrates in the game due to his absurd dps.

The people behind this list do not seem to be paying attention to the game as a whole right now. Perhaps they are only watching professional matches? If so, that is not a healthy way to build this tier list. That scene consists of about .05% of the player base.

Have to disagree with this article about Pharah. I'm an avid Pharah player and her rockets are low damage with even lower splash damage. I base this compared to an equal offensive player such as Mcree or a defensive player such as Hanzo. It takes 4 DIRECT hits to Mcree or Hanzo to kill. When Mcree can one shot or 6 rapid-fires Pharah AFTER he stuns. Pharah's rockets are low damage and slow moving. Her reloads are manageable. Against Mei, Pharah is almost unbearable in close quarters. So doing damage at a distance is ok. But don't forget about Widowmaker. I hunt Widowmakers and Mcrees specifically. One, to try and get them to aggro-quit and two, just to mess with them and have the satisfaction of killing them. In closed-quarters Mcree is a force but, in an open area map, I own.

@adamramos78 Mercy heals more than Zen actually, just saying.
How does Pharah zone better than Junkrat?
I have no experience in Pharah, but I have 33-35 hours on Junkrat and at least 230 on Overwatch (SIMOMEGA#2375), I have some hours in PTR too I included them on my normal playtime, and I can safely say that Pharah needs to be in the air to use her rockets and concussive blast at her best, Pharah's rockets can't bounce either, unlike Junkrat's grenades, he has a trap that can hardly be seen and the mine is also a scarecrow for the enemy team (if they aren't that braindead to go against him in a corridor anyway xd).
Good thing they are buffing Hanzo and Mei now, I hope we'll see at least 1 Defense Hero back in the meta.

@Bedders If this is a Soloq tier list then Mercy should be bottom of T2, she's still good, but Zen has just insane dps, 50% discord is no joke, no way Mercy is better than Zen, not even with that rez of hers, and Mercy requires a team that can protect her, she has a gun but unlike Zen she has lower dps and no hitscan, Zen's orbs are easier to hit the target as well, also Zen is so ridicoulusly strong that he might even be better than Lucio as solo healer, after nerf (30% discord) he will still be viable, but I hope all the alternative healers will be picked in competitive, and thanks to the double healer meta even less Lucio and more of Zen / Ana, Zen / Mercy, Ana / Mercy and so on, right now Zen is T1 at the very least, his ult charges pretty fast as well.
Mercy's ult isn't as good as Zen's FOR SOLOQ, because most of the time you will rez 1 or 2 ppl, at that point it's just better to put a discord on an enemy and ult right after that to prevent them from dying, after rez they will die again anyway (cuz rest of team is probably dead or your braindead Reinhardt / D.Va is trying to catch that Lucio), and last but not least after Zen buff Mercy was never picked, even Ana saw some play with Zen (Overwatch Open, still watching, I'm halfway through the playlist on YouTube).
Genji in T3? If you can use him quite well you can do massacre on the enemy team, I can average 30 elims in most matches when I go him, it doesn't require team coordination that much, I don't understand why he's T3.

@gustavomota13 Zenyatta is at least tier 1 in both pubs and competitive games. He's the go to off support in every team. Lucio offers great aoe heals but he doesn't offer the single target heals the team needs. Zenyatta covers that role and he covers it better than Mercy does imo.

Defense heroes are just bad period and they're bad in pubs too. The only reason some defense heroes have a high win rate is because the defense team usually wins in bottom to low level games, regardless of what they pick. Unorganized teams just have a hard time breaking a defense, even if the defense team has zero defense heroes.

Torb, for example, just happens to only be picked on defense teams 99% of the time. His win rate gets skewered from the fact that defense was going to win regardless of who's on the team. That doesn't mean torb is good. It just means that he's only picked on team defense.

The fact that bastion has a 52% win rate despite mainly only being picked on defense teams shows how effing bad that hero is. Big surprise that a sitting duck hero is easy to counter. You're actually better off with two Mccrees than one Mccree and one Bastion.

Mei, Junkrat, widowmaker, and hanzo are all awful too. Offense heroes outclass defense heroes, even when you are playing on defense. Pharah offers more reliable damage and zoning control than junkrat, widowmaker was overnerfed, and hanzo is just a worse widowmaker who doesn't fill a role you need, and mei may very well be the worst hero in the game. All defense heroes deserve rank 5 with bastion and mei at the bottom.

@gustavomota13 This isn't a list about how pros play in tightly coordinated teams, this is geared more towards small groups of friends or solo players queuing up - we do explain that in the intro.

why is symmetra tier 4? she has the highest overall winrate of all heroes.
her teleporter and turrets on defend=guaranteed win
most time i play symmetra i even get the potg
shes also easy to play for starters (since you dont really need to aim with her weapon/her turrets) except you play her in a very offensive way which i think you did

what do you mean by "most useful"? is this just a list of your favorite heroes/most picked heroes?

@SatoShi I made a number of changes for this edition of our tier list, including a movement for Widowmaker following the nerf. I'm making some further changes later on as I had a couple of uncertainties that I want to correct - I also think we perhaps need an extra bracket. You may or may not agree with the end result, but that is the nature of such things I'm afraid.

It was already outlined in the introduction, but I've changed the wording this morning to make it even clearer that this is not a tier list for professional players performing at a peak level of personal and cooperative team play. Rather, it's more suitable for the vast majority of players teaming up with friends or jumping into the random queue, and who want a snapshot of how things loosely stand at any given time.

I like how you guys say that Symmetra's personal damage is "poor" when her primary attack, which locks on to a target mind you, can get to 120dps. If you go against a Symmetra that knows how to bob and weave really well, you die really quick.

To be honest this tier list doesn't make that much sense. About Zenyatta as example, you're talking about bad damage output when his lmb attack combined with e is one of the most heaviest dmg outputs there are in this game. You are able to kill reinhardt with full hp in 4 hits while he has E on him. Also zenyatta can be played pretty defensively because of his high range and the possibility to heal your teammates from a very far away range. Soon he will be at tier 1-2, when people start to get good at this game.

Order from best to wtf of heroes and each of their strongest and weakest characteristics.

    Player - good / bad
Lucio - team buff / low health
Wins - mobility / low dmg output
mei - stall power / slow
    Reaper - ult&dmg / range
    McCree - stun / squishy
    Reinhardt - shield / range
Zarya - essentially invincible / speed
Mercy - ult / terrible dmg
Hanzo - HUGE dmg output/ poor in close quarters
Road hog - hook stuns!?! / slow and no range
    Tracer - mobility / health
    Dva - well rounded
    Zenyatta - ult / squishy
Soldier - heal plus ult combo /
Genji - deflect / medium quarters only
Junk Rat - super good / easy to counter
Pharah - flying or ult / easy target for snipe
Widow-maker - needs: better ult (shows each characters critical spots also?), ability to do some collaterals
Bastion - Let's your friends use him to learn how to play and that's about it.
Torj - too easy to counter
Symmetra - turrets are too weak for high skill levels teleporter is worthless for an ult (not even as good as Lucios passive)

Re Hanzo description "but he really only shines against low health, slow, or entirely stationary enemy targets."

--> This is completely false. A decent Hanzo can aim and hit moving targets, and headshotting full-life targets will one-shot them.

Junkrat's description is a bit off base.

"Nothing special in the way of mobility:" The man has a landmine that allows him to essentially rocketjump every five seconds. This works perfectly for escapes, returning to combat, and giving access to 2nd floor vantage points (which makes him even more of a threat).

"Pretty limited direct damage output:" Junkrat has some of the most insane damage output in the game. If you get someone trapped, even the heaviest of tanks, they won't survive three seconds. I'm guessing you're referring to his inability to direct this damage--sure, his weapon isn't the most accurate, but even if you miss, the splash damage is great at crowd control. If the enemy team bunches up, or if you're in close quarters, you can easily off 3-5 enemies with a few clips and a landmine.

Like you said, you have to work harder for these moments. Aka, you have to know how to aim an bounce the grenades. I get that this list is for new players, but you shouldn't be ranking these characters based on user skill and error. Junkrat shouldn't be deemed "low tier" just because people can't aim and he has no heals.
