On this page you'll find the likely release date for Hearthstone's Witchwood expansion, based on pre-order information and previous launches.
At the start of this week Blizzard finally announced that The Witchwood would be the eighth expansion for Hearthstone. When the new set lands, you'll be able to tuck into a total of 135 new creepy creature and spell cards, and some of them will even feature a couple of new keywords too. If single-player content's your thing, you'll be pleased to know that there's a new Monster Hunt mode to enjoy in this first of the three expansions that will form 2018's Year of the Raven.
What's the release date for Hearthstone's Witchwood expansion though? Well, we get our first clue thanks to a little bit of information that's detailed in the small print on the pre-order page for the new expansion. From this, we know that the card packs you pre-order will become available for use at some point on or before April 30th, 2018.
From here we can use historical data to pin things down a little more, and there are two important dates to consider in this context.
First of all, Whispers of the Old Gods (the first expansion of 2016) was released on April 26th 2016, while last year's Journey to Un'Goro came out on April 6th. Both of these were dates were a Thursday, we know this is Blizzard's preferred launch date in general, and so a Thursday release date for The Witchwood seems like a no-brainer to us.
We might be able to do a little better than that though. The Whispers of the Old Gods launched slightly later due to the adjustments being made to the Standard format and the initial reveal of The Witchwood came just over a week later than the reveal for Un'Goro.
If you apply those two extra nuggets of information to the more general launch window, we feel pretty confident in predicting that the release date for The Witchwood will most likely be Thursday, 12th April 2018. That should provide a solid window of time for all those lovely new cards to be revealed, but without making a hungry playerbase wait too long for a new meta to start chewing over.
As well as teasing the cards, Blizzard will also no doubt want to build up as much hype as possible for The Witchwood through the media, given that it heralds such a huge meta-shift for game that's just turned four years old. Three expansions (Whispers of the Old Gods, Karazhan and Mean Streets of Gadgetzan) rotate out of the Standard format, and there'll be lots to talk about.
