Blizzard has added an additional $1200 in cash to the Grand Prize component of Hearthstone's Quest for Packs promotion. The news was confirmed on the game's official forums late yesterday evening.

Quest for Packs sees players completing Daily Quests in order to gain entry tickets for the competition. The first name drawn out of the digital hat will receive the money, 1,000 card packs from each of the current rotation's expansions, and a few other bits and bobs.

Now an extra $1200 in cash has been added to the prize pool, but why? Here's the official explanation, direct from that forum post:

”We hope your Quest for Packs has been going well so far. We’ve heard hopeful adventurers voice concerns that the idea of winning the Grand Prize is a daunting prospect. That’s not in the spirit of a proper quest, so to help smooth your way, we’re making the rewards sweeter.”

Although Blizzard claims to be merely sweetening the existing deal, the community has speculated that the publisher is simply attempting to shelter the winner from a potential tax bill. Certain countries around the world (notably the US), can levy tax demands on prize winnings - not good for the player in question, or for publicity.

Regardless of the reasons for adding the prize, it's certainly a welcome addition to the pot. If you miss out on the Grand Prize, there are still other opportunities to win. Another 1,000 players will get a Mammoth Card Bundle (containing 10 packs from each of the three expansions), while a further 50,000 players will receive one pack from each card set.

The Quest for Packs promotion runs until 9:00PM on February 14th 2018.
