About John Bedford

Our Resurrect Priest deck list guide features the best Rastakhan deck list for Season 58 of Hearthstone (January 2019). Our Resurrect Priest guide also contains Mulligan advice, card combos and strategy tips.

Resurrect Priest is a deck that's certainly popped up in Hearthstone in the past, but has really risen in popularity over the last few weeks. The basic idea is that you field big or at least very powerful minions throughout the game. After your opponent has dealt with these threats, you then use cards like Lesser Diamond Spellstone, Eternal Servitude and Shadow Essence to re-summon them back onto the board.

You also have access to new Boomsday card Zerek's Cloning Gallery. This summons a 1 / 1 copy of each minion in your deck onto the board. Given the presence of cards like Prophet Velen and Malygos here, that means a huge amount of potential damage via subsequent spell plays like Mind Blast and Holy Smite.

In our Resurrect Priest guide, we've dug out one of the more competitive deck lists you can make use of right now, so you can take it out for a spin for yourself. We've also got some Mulligan advice for you, an outline of the general strategy involved in playing the deck, and finally a look at some of the core combos it contains.

UPDATE - JANUARY #2

Resurrect Priest has been tweaked ever so slightly since our last update, so we're highlighting a slightly refined version of the deck today. Nothing drastic has changed about the gameplay, however, so just make sure you grab the new deck code before taking this one to the ladder.

Resurrect Priest deck list and stratgegy

There are quite a few different versions of Resurrect Priest seeing play right now, but we think this is the strongest one you can take to the Hearthstone ladder this month.

VIDEO GUIDE - If you've not played Resurrect Priest before then we highly recommend watching this gameplay video by Kolento. It explains how the deck plays in a live environment and will help you get off to a stronger start.

It's important that you maintain board control during the early stages of a Resurrect Priest game, and we recommend looking to cards like Gilded Gargoyle and Radiant Elemental for the early-game. Don't idly waste the copies of The Coin generated by the former though, as these represent important late-game fuel for your finishing play.

When it comes to playing Shadow Visions, consider the opponent currently in front of you. If they're an aggro player, for example, you'll benefit greatly from picking cards like Spirit Lash.

It pays to keep track of your expired minions throughout the early and mid-game and consider how this is likely to impact the choices you get from cards like Eternal Servitude. Sometimes you can't help but make the play, but if you can push the odds of a preferential pick in your favour, then do so.

In the late-game there's a core play to be made involving Malygos, Prophet Velen and your damage spells Holy Smite and Mind Blast. Zerek's Cloning Gallery can be used to draw the first two if they're still sat in your deck somewhere, or you can make a big Lesser Diamond Spellstone play in order to - hopefully - bring them back from death.

With the extra copies of The Coin that have been generated by your Gargoyles, you should have enough Mana in the bank to finish your opponent off using the damage-dealing spells in your hand.

Resurrect Priest Mulligan guide

The following cards are worth watching out for during the Mulligan phase:

  • 1. Gilded Gargoyle - This card not only contests the early-game well, but also generates copies of The Coin. These are vital for empowering your late-game, post-Zerek's Cloning Gallery, spell damage plays.
  • 2. Shadow Visions - A very helpful card that will help you dig for a spell that's most likely to be of use to you in your current match-up.

Resurrect Priest tips, card combos and synergies

New to Resurrect Priest? The following combos should be at the back of your mind during every match!

- Holy Smite and Mind Blast should be saved for when you have Malygos and Prophet Velen out on the board. The boosted spell damage strength will often be enough to get you over the finishing line.

- When Radiant Elemental is out in play all of your spells will cost one Mana less. This effect stacks with multiple copies of the minion.

- Remember that Spirit Lash affects your own minions as well as the opponent's. For each point of damage inflicted though, a point of Health will be restored to your Hero when you cast this spell.

- When you play Eternal Servitude you'll be presented with up to three friendly minions that died during the course of the match. It's worth keeping track of your dead minions so you can play this at a preferential moment.

- Each time you cast a spell while Lyra the Sunshard is out on the board, a random Priest spell will be added to your hand.

- In its basic form, Lesser Diamond Spellstone re-summons two dead friendly minions back onto the board. Play four spells while it's in your hand though, and the number of minions summoned increases to three. Play another four spells and the card tops out at four resurrections.

- When your opponent eliminates Obsidian Statue, another one of their minions (if available) will be selected at random and destroyed. If this card gets re-summoned during the match it can give the other player a huge headache to deal with.

- New Legendary Spell Zerek's Cloning Gallery summons a 1 / 1 copy of every minion remaining in your deck out onto the board. This can be a huge play if Prophet Velen or Malygos are still tucked away in the deck pile - you only want them for their effects, not their stats, after all.

- When you hit End Turn, your active copy of The Lich King will reward you with one of eight special Death Knight cards, selected at random. Here are the options:

CostNameDescription
2Death CoilDeal 5 damage to an enemy, or restore 5 Health to a friendly character.
2Death GripSteal a minion from your opponent's deck and add it to your hand.
2ObliterateDestroy a minion. Your hero takes damage equal to its Health.
3Death and DecayDeal 3 damage to all enemies.
4Anti-Magic ShellGive your minions +2 / +2 and “Can't be targeted by spells or Hero Powers.”
5Doom PactDestroy all minions. Remove the top card from your deck for each minion destroyed.
6Army of the DeadRemove the top 5 cards of your deck. Summony any minions removed.
7FrostmourneDeathrattle: Summon every minion killed by this [5 / 3] weapon.

@BobbityBob Also, obviously those are Arcane Giants, not Golems. Apparently I can't think today.

I've been running this Rez Priest lately with success. Truthfully if you get a tough draw in the early stages then you're finished.

    2 Holy Smite
    2 Power Word Shield
    2 Resurrect
    2 Shadow Word Pain
    2 Injured Blade Master
    2 Shadow Word Death
    1 Thoughtsteal
    2 Priest of the Feast
    1 Excavated Evil
    2 Holy Nova
    2 Onyx Bishop
    Cairne
    2 Entomb
    Sylvanas
    1 Bog Creeper
    Ragnaros
    Soggoth
    2 Arcane Golem

I could see removing 1 or both Arcane Golems for more removal. It's just so satisfying to drop a cheap 8/8.

Just a thought, take out the alchemist and embrace for 2 shifting shades and pyromancer, and replace the bogs and rag for cairne and n'zoth. Still trying to find that answer to aggro decks though :(

@craigfleming26 Generally speaking I like to spam through games more or less on auto-pilot with something like Midrange Hunter until I'm 15-16, then play something a little more involved. That'll get you through the worst of the golden hero grinders / experimenters.

Not that I get to ladder very high these days anyway, sadly. Between staying on top of the metagame and running the rest of the site I don't have a lot of time for high ranking!

At the start of each season I find myself back at rank 19-20. 2/3 games I play in Ranked are against this deck, and it's really tiresome to constantly fight against all of that AOE, minions that won't die, and minions that die and then come back to life.

Thankfully they're all gone by rank 15.

@gabrielleandrodasilv You're welcome! I don't know if I've done it justice to be honest as it's really not my kind of deck and I found it a real slog to play and write. I've done my best though!

Recently, I opened Herald Volazj in one pack, so I decided to include him in a resurrect deck, I could say that it's really incredible how he can support this deck, sometimes you can summon mini copies of Ragnaros, Sylvanas, Cairne and/or other minions on field, and then just to enjoy when resurrecting them.
Not sure how competitive it could be, but it's really fun.
