Our Quest Warlock deck list guide features the best Rastakhan deck list for Season 57 of Hearthstone (December 2018). Our Quest Warlock guide also contains Mulligan advice, card combos and strategy tips.

Quest Warlock is a Hearthstone deck that takes the Lakkari Sacrifice card introduced earlier on this year and provides it with a major shot in the arm, thanks to the addition of a host of powerful cards in the Kobolds and Catacombs set. It may, in fact, prove to be the definitive Control version of the hero over time, but we're keeping the archetypes distinct until things settle down.

Once you've played your Quest card, your challenge is to Discard six cards in total. Do that and you receive a Nether Portal which permanently summons a pair of Flame Imp minions onto the board at the start of each turn. What makes that so interesting in Kobolds and Catacombs though? Well, say hello to Cataclysm, which can potentially fulfill that requirement in a single mid-game turn.

In our Quest Warlock guide, we've outlined a deck list that we've cooked up ahead of the Kobolds launch, and also provided some Mulligan tips. We've added in a general strategy overview, but until the meta settles down you'll find the bulk of our insight in the combo section at the bottom of the page. Expect ongoing updates to this article over the next few days!

Quest Warlock deck list and strategy

If you already own the Legendaries from metas gone by, this is a reasonably inexpensive deck to start with in Kobolds and Catacombs. As with all of our launch deck lists though this is subject to change, and we have to add the usual caveat about being careful with crafting dust early on in a new meta.

2 x Kobold Librarian2 x Tar Creeper
1 x Lakkari Sacrifice1 x Skulking Geist
2 x Malchezaar's Imp1 x The Lich King

We are very hopeful that Quest Warlock is going to make a big comeback in the Kobolds and Catacombs meta, but here's a quick overview of the strategy if you're either very rusty or you've never dabbled with this archetype before.

It's the new card Cataclysm that provides the real power this time around. Previously, completing the Lakkari Sacrifice Quest took far too long and had much too big of a downside. With Cataclysm, however, you can tick off the Quest in the mid-game, and create your Nether Portal. This permanently provides you with value at the start of each turn, summoning two Flame Imps onto your side of the board every turn.

In addition to this killer play, you have a huge number of control options to play around with. These come in the form of removal spells galore and plenty of meaty minions too. A special mention has to be made to Lesser Amethyst Spellstone as well - you'll be taking lots of damage throughout the match, so upgrading this card to deal out big damage and provide big healing should be pretty easy.

Come the late-game you've got lots of power in the form of Bloodreaver Gul'dan. He'll summon all of your dead Demon minions onto the board right away and also give you a new Hero Power which deals three damage to a target and provides three Health back to your hero. We also hang onto the Lich King in this deck, as he provides a solid body in the late-game and also provides some interesting spell options.

That's an extremely broad overview of the strategy behind playing this deck. If it proves popular, we'll update this guide over time with tips for handling specific match-ups in the Kobolds and Catacombs meta.

Quest Warlock Mulligan guide

You have to juggle things in quite an interesting way when it comes to Mulliganing for this new version of Quest Warlock. Getting hold of Cataclysm as quickly as possible is vital though, because once your Quest engine is under way you'll be very hard to stop.

The things is though, you don't really want to throw away your best cards if you can possibly avoid doing so, and so you have to take a slightly different approach to the Mulligan phase. We'll have more in-depth advice for you on that front on a future update, but there's some general advice we can give.

Shutting down aggro opponents is really important, and so your early-game removal options like Defile become very important. Mortal Coil is another good option here, although there is the danger you'll draw into something you really don't want to throw away! In fast match-ups, keep Vulgar Homunculus too as it's an annoying taunt and you're playing the wrong class if you're worried about your early-game Health...

We'll have more in-depth advice for you here in the next update, and once we've had a chance to road-test this archetype for ourselves.

Quest Warlock tips, combos and synergies

At this stage of the meta the best way to get going with Quest Warlock is to study how the cards combo together. Here's the complete lowdown on how this deck stacks up:

- Once you've played Lakkari Sacrifice you'll have to discard six cards in order to receive your Nether Portal reward. This portal cannot be removed by the opponent and will summon two Flame Imp minions for you at the start of each turn, and for the rest of the match.

- Ignore the negative Battlecry effect of Kobold Librarian as the value represented by the minion and the card draw is incredible! You're a Warlock, and early-game Health should be the least of your concerns.

- Dark Pact allows you to sacrifice one of your minions on the board in exchange for eight Health. Consider applying this either to a very low-impact minion, or one that's close to death anyway - might as well get something extra for it, after all.

- If Malchezaar's Imp is out on the board, every card you discard is replaced by a new one from your deck. In this version of the deck only Cataclysm has this interaction.

- Plan your Defile turn carefully and think through all the stages of the multiple triggers. Once cast it will do one damage to all minions. If one of them dies, the spell is cast again. This repeats until no minions are killed by the damage - it's possible to chain some impressive clears here with a bit of forward planning.

- Lesser Amethyst Spellstone does three damage to a minion and restores three Health to your hero in its vanilla state. Take damage from any of your cards though and the value increases to five. Take damage again and it levels up to seven damage/restoration. See our Spellstone guide for more detail on these kinds of cards.

- Keep in mind that Abyssal Enforcer does damage to all friendly and enemy minions, and both heroes too.

- Despicable Dreadlord deals one damage to all enemy minions at the end of your turn. That means you only have to leave those targets close to death in order to pick them off the board. Don't overkill when you don't have to.

- When you cast Siphon Soul you'll both destroy the targeted enemy minion and return three points of Health back to your Hero in the process.

- When Bloodreaver Gul'dan is played you'll gain five points of Armor and a new Hero Power which does three points of damage to a target while restoring three points of Health to your hero. All dead Demon minions will be resummoned onto the board too.

- The Lich King has a collection of special cards and at the end of each of your turns he'll add a randomly chosen one to your hand. These are the options:

2Death CoilDeal 5 damage to an enemy, or restore 5 Health to a friendly character.
2Death GripSteal a minion from your opponent's deck and add it to your hand.
2ObliterateDestroy a minion. Your hero takes damage equal to its Health.
3Death and DecayDeal 3 damage to all enemies.
4Anti-Magic ShellGive your minions +2 / +2 and “Can't be targeted by spells or Hero Powers.”
5Doom PactDestroy all minions. Remove the top card from your deck for each minion destroyed.
6Army of the DeadRemove the top 5 cards of your deck. Summony any minions removed.
7FrostmourneDeathrattle: Summon every minion killed by this [5 / 3] weapon.
