Our Quest Hunter deck list guide features the best Rastakhan deck list for Season 57 of Hearthstone (December 2018). Our Quest Hunter guide also contains Mulligan advice, card combos and strategy tips.
Quest Hunter is a Hearthstone deck that was introduced with the Journey to Un'Goro expansion, and it's structured around the Hunter's Legendary Quest card from that same expansion, The Marsh Queen. Although it seemed potentially potent at the start of the Un'goro meta, it struggled to keep up with the rest of the pack.
Thanks to a few new cards introduced with The Witchwood, plus others from Rastskhan’s Rumble, it looks as though the Quest Hunter may be getting a pretty significant shot in the arm. In the latest update to our guide on how to play this deck, we wanted to highlight a theorycrafted decks ahead of the release of the next expansion. There’s a strong chance that it will undergo many changes over the coming days, so don’t spend too much dust crafting cards or feel free to experiment with alternatives if you’d like.
First up we've got the updated deck list for you, along with a little bit of Mulligan advice to get you off to the best possible start. After that we've got an overview of the very simple overall strategy involved in playing Quest Hunter. Finally, we've split out all of the combos contained in this particular version of the deck, so you can get a more detailed overview of the synergies involved.
We'll keep tracking this one closely (no pun intended), and will make sure we're highlighting the most powerful version in the current meta. We'll also keep expanding on the strategy advice of this guide if the archetype proves popular in the Rastakhan’s Rumble meta.
UPDATE - RASTAKHAN'S RUMBLE LAUNCH

The general strategy behind playing the updated version of Quest Hunter involves controlling the early game by combining Dire Frenzy and Crackling Razormaw with cheap minions such as Dire Mole or Springpaw. This ensures you have a big fat board presence to make favourable trades with, while also shuffling copies of these improved minions back into your deck.
More control comes in the form of Houndmaster Shaw, allowing your beefed-up minions to keep the opponent's board in check. If you've managed to tick off that quest by the time Shaw is played, you'll have an army of 3 / 2 Raptors in your deck, just waiting to get good work done.
A number of new Rastakhan’s Rumble cards make this task even easier. There’s Halazzi, the Lynx that will fill your hand with more one drops to help finish off the quest. Once it is complete, you’ll be able to use Master’s Call to draw those Raptors into your hand, as chances are you’ll hit all three with the Discover effect. Meanwhile, Untamed Beastmaster will buff them up even more when you draw them.
Quest Hunter Mulligan guide
Always keep The Marsh Queen as you hope to be motoring through one drops as quickly as possible here. With that in mind, you’ll want to keep a couple of one drops in your hand so you can get on the board quickly, too.
Weapons can be another very worthwhile hold so you can maintain board control against your opponent without sacrificing too many of your important minions. You also have Flanking Strike and Hunter’s Mark as decent removal options, but they’re not worth holding unless you know you’re coming up against big threats very quickly.
Apart from that it's very hard to give specific advice at this stage. Once the launch meta has settled down a bit we'll be back with advice on what to keep against specific heroes. We just need to find out what that new meta looks like before we can do so!
Quest Hunter tips, combos and synergies
Let's look at all of the combos you're going to need to exploit in order to make this deck list work. As the recommended deck list changes, we'll make sure this section of our Quest Hunter guide reflects those changes too.
- Hunter's Mark will bring even the most stubborn of enemy minions down to size, and leave it vulnerable to an attack from even your feeblest minion - or weapon.
- Once The Marsh Queen is in play you need to field seven 1-Mana minions to summon Queen Carnassa into your hand. Once played, this 5 Mana 8 / 8 Beast will shuffle 15 Raptors into your deck!
- As long as Tundra Rhino is out in play, any subsequently summoned Beast minions will be able to attack on the same turn they're played.
- Deathstalker Rexxar does two points of damage to all enemy minions, grants your hero five points of Armor and also changes your Hero Power to Build-A-Beast. This allows you to stitch two dead Beast minions together into a new creation which has their combined stats, Mana cost and effects.
- Master's Call gives the deck some significant card draw, especially once you’ve filled your draw pile with additional beasts by completing the Hunter quest or using Dire Frenzy. There’s a good chance you’ll draw three every time!
- Untamed Beastmaster will buff any Beast minions drawn by +2 / +2 when it’s on the board. Considering that your deck is usually full to the brim with Beasts there’s some significant value to be found here
- If you've got a Beast out in play, then you can apply Crackling Razormaw's Battlecry effect to it. This lets you buff it with one of three Adapt options from the broader pool of ten:
Adapt Name | Effect |
---|---|
Crackling Shield | Divine Shield |
Flaming Claws | +3 Attack |
Liquid Membrane | Can't be targeted by spells or Hero Powers |
Lightning Speed | Windfury |
Living Spores | Deathrattle: Summon two 1/1 Plants |
Massive | Taunt |
Poison Spit | Poisonous |
Rocky Carapace | +3 Health |
Shrouding Mist | Stealth until your next turn |
Volcanic Might | +1 / +1 stats |
