Miracle Rogue is a Hearthstone deck archetype that will be very familiar to those of you have have played the game since its very earliest days. The way this deck works is pretty simple on paper: control the early game by using minions and spells to efficiently clear the board, then feed spells into Gadgetzan Auctioneer so that you draw into a very healthy hand that's absolutely stuffed to the brim with damage potential.
From here, it's a case of obliterating the opponent's health pool into nothing, although in practice it's rarely so simple. We've compiled this Miracle Rogue guide to help you get started, although we should be clear in saying there's no substitute for hard experience when it comes to truly mastering this archetype. If you're looking for shortcuts for climbing the ladder faster, this is not the deck you need!

This is the version of Miracle Rogue that's currently finding most success on the Standard ladder since our last update. We'll keep updating this recommended list as the Witchwood meta develops.

Miracle Rogue is all about pulling off seemingly impossible feats of card draw and card combos by cycling through your deck in large chunks to wildly outvalue your opponent. Gadgetzan Auctioneer is the keystone to making the deck work, allowing you to use the Rogue’s cheap spells to continuously draw and play cards in one epic chain.
By playing so many cards and taking so many actions you can often set up a ludicrously large Edwin VanCleef or simply do so much per turn that your opponent cannot do enough to match. They’re forced to watch as you play card after card and finish them off with Leeroy Jenkins or a board of Spiders.
Early game: Your early turns won’t be all that exciting. Play like a control deck where you can to thin out your opponent’s minions using Backstab, Eviscerate, Fan of Knives and weapon attacks. You’re mostly just biding your time and drawing cards at this stage, but if an opportunity does come up to build a significantly sized Edwin VanCleef you should go for it.
Mid game: While it’s not massively important to establish your own board presence, you should continue removing your opponent’s minions so you don’t lose control of the game. Play Fal’dorei Strider to fill your deck with Ambush cards – these will be very useful later once your card draw chain has begun. Elven Minstrel can help you draw more cards too if you’re still looking for a Gadgetzan Auctioneer.
Late game: Here’s where the fun begins. As soon as you drop Gadgetzan Auctioneer your opponent knows they’re going to be a spectator for a while. Make sure you have enough free or cheap follow up spells to start a chain and then let it rip. Preparation can be used to discount spells in your hand to keep the draws coming, or you can use it as a hail mary and hope the next card you draw is another spell you can play. Also, if you come across any Ambush cards, they’ll be played automatically and the cycling will continue.
How exactly do you win from here, though? Well, by drawing through most of your deck you’ll have gathered so many resources that you should have multiple ways to win the game. Leeroy Jenkins and Cold Blood is a classic finisher; you can attack an opponent’s health directly with damage spell such as Eviscerate and Shiv; or Vilespine Slayer can remove any minions standing in the way of your spider army.
Some tips to keep in mind when up against aggro decks:
- Backstab, Shiv and Fan of Knives are all vital in the early game to stop them getting too far ahead.
- Look for Fire Fly to give you an early foothold on the board and give your opponent something to attack that isn’t your life total.
- Bloodmage Thalnos can be played as a simple 1/1 minion if you need a body to contest minions. Losing the spell damage buff isn’t too big a deal and you get a card draw anyway.
- You can also go for an earlier, if slightly weaker, Edwin VanCleef should you need a creature on the board.
- Every life point you have is precious so be careful how often you use your hero power to clear minions and try to avoid unnecessary damage.
Some words of advice for facing control opponents:
- You’ll want to set up an especially big finish against control decks to prevent them from recovering from a large attack.
- Now that Conceal has been sent to the Hall of Fame, there’s no way to play your Gadgetzan Auctioneer and keep it safe from removal. Only play it if you can get excellent value in that turn or you’re confident it won’t be taken out.
- Use Sap to send their big minions straight back to their hand or destroy them completely with Vilespine Slayer.
- Some very quiet turns using your hero power or attacking with your weapon are fine in the early game.
- You can use cards like Shiv and Fan of Knives for their draw effects instead of worrying about dealing damage.

Miracle Rogue Mulligan guide
Miracle Rogue only has a couple of clear mulligan choices because of the deck’s unique playstyle, but these are the cards to look for:
- Firefly: Decent turn one drop to get yourself on the board.
- Backstab: Very strong early game removal tool.
- Fal’dorei Strider: The early you get the Ambushes shuffled into your deck the quicker you can draw them!
- SI:7 Agent: Excellent tempo play, especially if activated with a Backstab.
- Edwin VanCleef: You can sometimes straight up win games with a large Edwin VanCleef played early.
Miracle Rogue tips, card combos and synergies
Here are the most important combos to be found in this Witchwood version of Miracle Rogue:
- Bloodmage Thalnos boosts the strength of every damage-dealing spell by one. Consider cards like Backstab, Fan of Knives, Shiv and Eviscerate in particular in the context of this booster.
- Edwin VanCleef grows in strength for each card you played ahead of him on the same turn. Be wary of over-committing strength to this one minion in an uncertain metagame.
- When Gadgetzan Auctioneer is out on the board, you'll an extra card from your deck for each spell you cast. With the retirement of Conceal to the Hall of Fame, it's important you get plenty of value from this minion during the same turn he's played.
- Once you've played Preparation (for free), the next spell you cast on the same turn will cost three Mana less than usual.
- Vilespine Splayer is capable of obliterating any enemy minion, but you must play another card first and on the same turn in order for this effect to go off.
- Other cards that require an earlier play on the same turn to provide their bonus effects are Cold Blood, SI:7 Agent, Elven Minstrel and Eviscerate. Check the card details to get an understanding of the bonus effect in each case.
- With Hench-Clan Thug out on the board, each attack you make with your weapon will cause the minion to gain an extra +1 / +1 of stats.
Miracle Rogue card choices and substitutions
There are a handful of absolutely essential cards to Miracle Rogue that we’ve covered below, as well as some suggestions for replacements where possible:
- Backstab: It has so many uses: free removal, combo activator and free card draw with Gadgetzan Auctioneer.
- Preparation: Can be vital for keeping your miracle draws going by discounting a spell in your hand or luckily pulling one off the top of your deck. A must-have.
- Cold Blood: Big finisher card when buffing a minion such as Leeroy Jenkins and also cheap enough to keep your draws going with Gadgetzan Auctioneer.
- Bloodmage Thalnos: Can be a nice bonus if you use Fan of Knives or Eviscerate alongside it, but works just as well as card draw.
- Eviscerate: A good way to keep minions under control or go for face damage in the late game.
- Edwin VanCleef: With the sheer number of cards you can draw and play on a single turn there’s so much opportunity to build up a massive Edwin VanCleef that it remains an essential part of the deck. Questing Adventurer is an acceptable replacement.
- Fal’dorei Strider: Can help give you a bigger board presence with the Ambush cards it shuffles into your deck.
- Leeroy Jenkins: Offers another big finisher and Shadowstep means you can play it multiple times a turn in the late game. Consider running Reckless Rocketeer or Southsea Deckhand as alternatives.
- Vilespine Slayer: Minion removal and an extra creature on the board is a big tempo swing. Assassinate can take its place but offers far less value.
- Gadgetzan Auctioneer: This is the key card that makes the deck work. Do not play it too freely and always look for ways to protect it.
