Our Malygos Shaman deck list guide features the best Rastakhan deck list for Season 57 of Hearthstone (December 2018). Our Malygos Shaman guide also contains Mulligan advice, card combos and strategy tips.

Malygos Shaman is a Hearthstone deck that’s been getting some serious attention again since the latest card reveals for Rastakhan’s Rumble. There is a little scepticism as to whether it’ll be able to come together successfully, but from simply looking at the cards on their own there’s definitely a lot of potential in the deck.

Electra Stormsurge and Eureka! were two pieces from the Boomsday expansion that gave us hope for the deck, but there are now a handful of additional cards from Rastakhan’s Rumble that support it even further. If you look at the likes of Krag’wa the Frog and Totemic Smash, you can see ways to make the deck more reliable and offer even more damage for the combo.

Essentially, then, the aim of getting out a Malygos for cheap using Eureka! and then surprising your opponent with excessive burst damage is still the same. Now there are simply more pieces to help enable it - and you can even make a second attempt at it, as Krag’wa the Frog brings spells cast on the previous turn back to your hand!

An important note: right now we are still right in the middle of the theorycrafting stage for Rastakhan’s Rumble. As such, the deck list we’re using below may undergo a multitude of changes over the next few days as players find more efficient or more effective lists. We’ll be keeping this page updated with all the latest developments, but for now here’s the best Malygos Shaman deck for the Rastakhan’s Rumble launch:

We wanted to bring you an updated post-launch version of Malygos Shaman so you could get stuck into an alternative take on it right away. It’s still subject to change, of course, in the coming weeks so careful with your crafting dust.

At this early stage the combo section at the bottom of this page goes into further detail about how to play Malygos Shaman.

As a general overview of the strategy involved, your plan is to summon Malygos onto the board using Eureka! on turn 10, so you can follow up by sending both copies of Totemic Smash and Lightning Bolt directly at your opponent's life total for 30 damage.

You get a bit of insurance with this version of the deck, though, thanks to Krag’wa the Frog. With this new Shaman legendary, you can use important combo spells early to help clear the board or weaken your opponent and then bring them back to your hand the very next turn. It gives you that little extra reach that was missing in the previous version, if you couldn’t pull off the combo in a single turn.

Early game: The early game is all about not letting your opponent run away with the match and drawing through to your combo pieces. Use your cheap removal spells such as Zap! to keep your opponent’s side of the board clear, while Doomsayer can also be used to disrupt some of their opening plays. Your draw effects such as Far Sight and Mana Tide Totem are important to play so you can start cycling through your deck.

Mid game: You gain access to even more board clears here if your opponent is threatening to overrun you with minions. Not only do you have Lightning Storm, but you can also cast Volcano if you need a more drastic response. Just remember that it will hit your minions too if you have any on the board. Zentimo and some of your other removal cards such as Zap! or Hex can also be a very strong play to hit multiple opposing minions at once. Use more draw effects to get your Malygos and other combo pieces in hand if you haven’t already.

Late game: Now’s the time to pull the trigger on your big Malygos combo. If you can, wait until turn 10 so you can cast Eureka! to summon Malygos, then follow that up with both copies of Totemic Smash and Lightning Bolt directly at the opponent's life total. That should usually be enough to secure you the win. If you need to hit them with more, Krag’wa, the Frog can bring back all the spells you’ve cast on the previous turn, while Spirit of the Frog can draw more if they’re still hiding in your deck.

Aggro opponents

Here are some tips to keep in mind when facing aggro opponents on ladder:

  • 1. Try your best to maintain board control. You have a lot of decent removal spells, though try to keep cards like Totemic Smash and Lightning Bolt as you need them for your combo.
  • 2. You can also use Doomsayer in the early game to slow down their aggressive plays and keep their side of the board clear.
  • 3. The big area of effect removal spells such as Lightning Storm and Volcano can be devastating against aggro.
  • 4. Remember you also have Zentimo which can be paired brilliantly with the likes of Zap! to hit multiple minions.
  • 5. If you do fall behind and need some late game defence, then Rain of Toads is perfect for putting up a wall between your opponent’s minions and your life total.

Control opponents

These tips can help you get the upper hand against control decks:

  • 1. You will not be in much of a rush in this match up, so take your time to draw through your deck with Far Sight and Mana Tide Totem.
  • 2. You will have to be cautious about some control decks that can gain extra armour, which will make it less likely your combo with finish them off in one turn.
  • 3. You do have Krag’wa, the Frog, which can be very helpful at mitigating the above problem. If you use all your combo pieces on one turn, you can bring all those spells back again the turn after and go for your opponent’s life total once again.
  • 4. Control may try to overwhelm you with many large minions, but Zentimo into Hex can completely shut down their plans.
  • 5. Hagatha the Witch can give you some late game reach if you need to hold out for a little longer against a control deck.

Malygos Shaman Mulligan guide

These are a few of the cards you’ll want to look for in your opening hand when playing Malygos Shaman:

  • 1. Zap!: Decent early game removal that can help clear off weak minions at a minimal cost.
  • 2. Far Sight: The card draw is nice, but you could get lucky and hit one of your more expensive combo pieces, which will set you up for an even stronger late game.
  • 3. Bloodmage Thalnos: If you can combine it with some of your spells for the extra damage that’s great, but it also serves a purpose to contest the board early and cycle you a card.
  • 4. Mana Tide Totem: Gives you the card draw you need to find the important combo pieces deep within your deck.
  • 5. Doomsayer: Offers the early game stall you need against faster decks so you can draw into your Malygos combo.

Malygos Shaman tips, combos and synergies

Here are some of the more important combos that you have to play with in this exact version of Malygos Shaman. As the deck list changes, so we'll update this section.

- Spirit of the Frog can be used to draw through a lot of spells in your deck on a single turn. As it draws a spell that costs one more than the previous one, you can cycle through Zap! to draw your Lightning Bolt or Totemic Smash, for example.

- Volcano damages minions on both sides of the board. It is possible to tip the odds in your favour when it comes to having a friendly minion survive, so consider some partial or full trades if there's more than 15 Health's worth of stuff on the board!

- Eureka! summons a copy of a minion in your hand onto the board. Ideally you want this to pull Malygos, so get rid of any other minions first. Even more ideally, you'd like to play this spell after putting a reduced-cost Electra Stormsurge onto the board so you can get a pair of Malygos dragons.

- Having set your board up with improved spell damage, you can then fire cards like Totemic Smash and Lightning Bolt into your opponent's face for a massive amount of damage.

- Hagatha the Witch does three points of damage to all minions and grants you a new Hero Power. This passive ability gifts you a random Shaman spell every time you drop a minion onto the board.

- To help you stay on track of your face-damage sums, remember that each copy of Malygos on the board increases the damage of your spells by five points.

Card choices and substitutions

As players are experimenting with this deck once more there’s a chance that some of the cards will change as it becomes better optimised. These are the important ones to consider for now:

  • Totemic Smash: The totem summoning effect is useful, but what you’re really playing it for is the incredibly valuable two damage for just one mana.
  • Lightning Bolt: A vital part of your damage combo alongside Malygos and Totemic Smash. Combined you can do 30 points of damage in one turn, which will be enough to defeat most opponents.
  • Electra Stormsurge: Can be used to get you two copies of Malygos using Eureka! or you can combine it with a damage spell for two hits on just a single cast.
  • Haunting Visions: Can discover you more spells to use as part of your combo, plus it provides a significant reduction on the next spell you cast.
  • Zentimo: A new card for Rastakhan’s Rumble that spreads the effect of your spells to nearby minions. Excellent when combined with Zap! or Hex for some unexpected area of effect removal.
  • Eureka!: Used to summon your copy of Malygos to the board at a significant discount. You’ll either want your hand clear of other minions for a guaranteed hit or hope you get lucky.
  • Krag’wa, the Frog: If you’re forced to use some of the spells in your combo early this card can bring them back to your hand, or set you up so you can cast them again next turn.
  • Hagatha the Witch: Enters with a strong area of effect ability that can sometimes clear the board, plus her unique hero power can give you more useful spells.
  • Malygos: The centrepiece to make your 30 damage combo work alongside Totemic Smash and Lightning Bolt. You’ll want to play it through Eureka! if you can though to pull off the combo properly.
