Our Kingsbane Rogue deck list guide features the best deck list for Season 54 of Boomsday (September 2018). Our Kingsbane Rogue guide also contains Mulligan advice, card combos and strategy tips.

Kingsbane Rogue is a Hearthstone archetype that unsurprisingly looks towards the stickiness afforded by that blade for its endless staying power. No matter how often that blade gets destroyed or worn out, back into the deck it goes - and it keeps hold of every enchantment added to it earlier on in the game as well.

In the latest edition of this guide we're highlighting the best Boomsday version of the deck, but it's important to note that the deck will continue to be refined in the new meta. In this guide though we're outlined the version that we believe to be the strongest, and we also have Mulligan advice, strategy tips and card combos to help you get up to speed with all the latest developments.

UPDATE - SEPTEMBER #1

A couple of minor tweaks have been made to the Kingsbane Rogue format over the last week or so. We've added in the new deck list, so make sure you import it into your game. It's also worth brushing up on the combo section which now reflects those changes!

Kingsbane Rogue deck list and strategy

Although this is not a particularly strong deck in the overall competitive roster right now, we think this is the best version of Kingsbane Rogue you can play at this stage of the Boomsday meta:

2 x Preparation1 x Gluttonous Ooze
2 x Deadly Poison1 x Captain Greenskin
2 x Doomerang
1 x Kingsbane
2 x Cavern Shinyfinder

General strategy

Kingsbane Rogue is – unsurprisingly – built entirely around the Legendary Rogue weapon Kingsbane. It begins as a fairly ineffectual 1/3 in the early game, but as you buff it using cards such as Deadly Poison, Leeching Poison and Captain Greenskin it becomes the deck’s most significant source of damage and removal. With a lot of card draw included in the deck too, you can more consistently pull it from your deck whenever it’s shuffled back in.

Early game: Your whole early game is focused on steadily buffing Kingsbane or tracking it down if you don’t have it in your starting hand. Cavern Shinyfinder can guarantee you’ll get the weapon, while also doing a reasonable job of contesting the board against opponents who don’t have a one damage hero power.

Mid game: Continue coating Kingsbane in buff effects and use it to keep your opponent’s board under control. The weapon should have a fair few buffs on it at this stage that can help, while keeping yourself healed up thanks to Leeching Poison. Elsewhere, cards like Doomerang make use of the weapon in more interesting ways to offer some extra removal.

If you’re still trying to draw Kingsbane at this point then the game has likely slipped away from you, but that’s one major weakness of the deck you can run into - even with all the card cycle. It's not impossible to win by any means, but they are going to be tough times ahead.

Late game: Now - assuming you have a decently buffed Kingsbane - you’ll want to be swinging for face damage as much as possible. You can use Vilespine Slayer to cut through any Taunt minions your opponent puts up to try and block you, or simply Sap them away. Valeera the Hollow can also be useful to give you a turn of safety before dealing the final blow.

Aggro opponents

Here’s a selection of tips for dealing with aggro decks:

  • 1. Kingsbane Rogue can be quickly overwhelmed by aggro, so try to keep their board under as much control as possible in the early game.
  • 2. If your opponent develops a wide board you have Fan of Knives and Blade Flurry to help you catch up.
  • 3. The sooner you get Leeching Poison applied the better as the healing will allow you to outlast the damage from aggro decks.
  • 4. Vanish can be a desperate Turn 6 play to temporarily slow down aggro, or earlier if you use Preparation.

Control opponents

Use these tips to gain an advantage over control opponents on ladder:

  • 1. Kingsbane Rogue is much safer against slower decks, so take your time drawing cards and buffing your weapon.
  • 2. You have a few solid removal options for their biggest minions, including Sap, Doomerang and Vilespine Slayer.
  • 3. As long as you have the key pieces in the deck, it’s not too much of a disaster if you play minions that’ll make you overdraw on occasion.
  • 4. If you sense your opponent has set up a winning play next turn then you have Valeera the Hollow to give you a chance to delay and find a way to counter it.

Kingsbane Rogue Mulligan guide

You’ll want to search for these cards in your opening hand when playing Kingsbane Rogue:

  • 1. Kingsbane: The deck is built around this weapon so starting with it in hand will get you off to the best start.
  • 2. Cavern Shinyfinder: An excellent way to draw Kingsbane at the start of the game, or to pull it from your deck after it’s shuffled back in.
  • 3. Leeching Poison: The quicker you buff Kingbane the stronger it’ll become and the Lifesteal is useful to help you survive.

Kingsbane Rogue tips, combos and synergies

It really pays to understand all of the synergies available to you with Kingsbane Rogue, so you can extract as much value as possible from each play.

To help with that, we've split out all of the combos from this particular deck list so you understand how everything works together. As the deck list is refined, so too will the advice in this section of our Kingsbane Rogue guide.

- Let's start with the basics. Any buffs you put on Kingsbane such as Deadly Poison or Leeching Poison are retained when the weapon is destroyed and shuffled back into your deck.

- Once Preparation has been cast, your subsequently played spell will cost three Mana less than it otherwise would have. Sprint is a common card to combo in this regard.

- Cavern Shinyfinder is guaranteed to put Kingsbane back into your hand when played, as it's the only weapon that exists in this particular deck list.

- Doomerang can be used to deal your current Kingsbane attacking strength directly at a minion. The blade then returns to your hand where it can be equipped once more.

- Elven Minstrel is great for drawing into your deck, but to get that combo to trigger you need to play at least one other card first and on the same turn.

- Cutthroat Buccaneer will give your weapon an extra two points of attacking strength, but only if you played another card first and on the same turn.

- You can use Blade Flurry to detonate a suitable charged-up Kingsbane and potentially wipe the board.

- Captain Greenskin grants your weapon an extra point of Attack and Durability when played onto the board. New card Toxicologist gives it one point of Attack when fielded into play.

- Vilespine Slayer can be used to eliminate any enemy minion, but only if you play another card first on the same turn.

- Valeera the Hollow grants you stealth for the opponent's next turn, and also adds a token spell to your hand which mimics the last card you played.

Card choices and substitutions

Kingsbane Rogue is already a well-established and well-refined deck so many of the key cards are already set in place. Here’s more detail about each one, plus some ideas for replacements if needed:

  • Deadly Poison: An important buff for Kingsbane to steadily build up its damage potential.
  • Doomerang: Can deal some serious damage to a minion if you’ve been buffing up Kingsbane.
  • Kingsbane: The card the deck is built around. Its Deathrattle means you’ll never discard it, and all those buffs will stick around for the next time you draw it.
  • Cavern Shinyfinder: A 100% guarantee to pull Kingsbane from your deck. Handy if you can’t find it in your opening Mulligan, or need to fish it back out again in the late game.
  • Leeching Poison: Another buff for Kingsbane. This gives you the sustain you need to survive into the late game with all the minion trading you’ll do with the weapon.
  • Elven Minstrel: Can draw through the deck’s minions to get you a Cavern Shinyfinder. Other card draw options for the deck include Sprint and Myra’s Unstable Element.
  • Captain Greenskin: An excellent weapon buff. If you’re feeling especially greedy you can Vanish it back to your hand to reapply the buff again.
  • Vilespine Slayer: You might need this hard removal to get through one of your opponent’s Taunt minions or to take out an especially tough threat.
  • Valeera the Hollow: Gives you an extra bit of survivability in the late game and sometimes that one extra turn is all you need to secure the win.

Toxicologist is listed under Rogue cards when it should be under neutral.
