Our Destiny 2: Trials of the Nine guide contains everything you need to know about this Crucible PVP mode

In the original Destiny, Guardians could participate in a weekly end-game Crucible event called the Trials of Osiris. It pitted fireteams of three against one another in a highly competitive environment, with the sole aim of going on a winstreak long enough to reach The Lighthouse - an exclusive location where you can purchase rare gear.

Destiny 2’s Trials of the Nine introduces the same level of PVP intensity, providing high level Guardians a chance to compete against others who’ve also reached the end-game. The ultimate aim is to go on a flawless run of matches and cash in on your prowess by getting some exclusive end-game gear from The Third Spire - a dazzling new vendor hub.

Editor's UPDATE #6: We've updated this article with the latest mode and map for this week (1st December). We'll continue adding further strategy advice and info to this page over time, so keep this guide bookmarked for more very soon!

(If you want to be the best at every area of the game, don't forget to bookmark our PVP, Campaign walkthrough and Subclass guide pages - they've got everything you need if you want to get more out of Destiny 2, and will be continuously updated in the weeks ahead.)

What's the format this week? (1st December 2017)

Trials of the Nine is back this week and the format this time is Survival on The Dead Cliffs.

Trials of the Nine: How to access it and the general ruleset

How to access

Below you’ll find how to get involved in Trials of the Nine (ToTN), including what requirements you’ll have to meet and how to get matches under way.

Here's how to start matchmaking.

  • Get a fireteam of four together.
  • Go to your Director, selector Crucible, followed by Trials of the Nine.
  • This will automatically place you in a match.

Ruleset

We’ve listed every basic detail about Trials of the Nine below which will give you a greater understanding of how it works.

  • Fireteams must be composed of 4 players before you can start matchmaking.
  • Loadouts are locked, meaning you have to choose what gear you’re bringing into the fight before you begin searching for a match. You cannot change your weaponry/armour during a ToTN match.
  • Power level advantages are disabled. This puts everyone on a relatively even playing field.
  • Hover over your ToTN icon in the Director and it’ll display a Game History scorecard with ten check boxes. This tracks each match you play and records each win and loss.
  • Winning one match kickstarts the scorecard’s progress tracking, however, losing your first match will not.
  • The ultimate aim in ToTN is to go flawless with seven wins.
  • Three losses are forgiven by the system, but of course, losing a match means you won’t have gone flawless.
  • Lose four matches and the scorecard will reset. You can also reset the scorecard manually by hovering over it in the director and holding [Interact].

Trials of the Nine: Reset Schedule

Trials of the Nine first went live on, 15th September 2017. Since then, it's offered an intense PVP playground that resets each week.

Each week Trials of the Nine resets, placing Guardians in a brand new map and game mode. Below we’ve got details on what time the reset will take place, and what each week has in store.

Reset times

Here’s exactly when the reset begins each week in your region:

  • 18:00pm BST
  • 19:00pm EU
  • 13:00pm EST
  • 10:00am PST
  • 03:00am AWST

Trials of the Nine: The Third Spire

How does it work and what rewards do I earn for winning matches?

Here’s everything you need to know about the Trials of the Nine social space, and the rewards you’ll earn for winning matches.

  • Winning matches will earn you Trials of the Nine tokens and Rare or Legendary Engrams.
  • Losing matches will still grant you a chance of receiving Rare or Legendary Engrams.
  • Win one match and you’ll gain access to The Third Spire vendor/social space. You can access this area through the Director.

The Third Spire is home to four different reward tiers and they’re all determined by how many matches you win and the number of Trials of the Nine tokens you’ve amassed.

There are a total of three vendors or Emissaries in The Third Spire and they work just like any other vendors in The Farm or Tower. Hand over Trials of the Nine tokens and you’ll build up a reputation meter. Fill this bar up and you’ll receive Engrams which’ll drop you Legendary ToTN loot.

Here’s a list of each reward tier.

  • One win will give you access to the first Emissary.
  • Three wins allows you to access the second Emissary which will reward you with a ToTN Legendary Engram. You can cash in your tokens here to build reputation too.
  • Seven wins (with three losses) grants you access to the third vendor who grants you a choice between three Legendary ToTN weapons.
  • A flawless run of seven wins in a row opens up a unique path to the final (massive) Emissary. When you interact with them, you’ll be given a choice of two free Legendary gifts specific to your Class, an Emblem and an Aura.
  • The flawless Emissary is also your only way of obtaining the exclusive Flawless ToTN gear. Build up enough reputation and you’ll earn Engrams containing these items.

Trials of the Nine: Loot Rewards (Armour Sets)

If you end up amassing enough Trials of the Nine Tokens to spend at the Third Spire, you'll have a chance of earning a unique armour set. Below we've embedded a video showcasing each armour set for all the classes in Destiny 2.

It's worth quickly pointing out that these aren't flawless armour sets, but they're incredibly similar. The only difference between the normal and flawless is the latter features a glowing effect. Otherwise, everything else remains the same.

Trials of the Nine: Loot Rewards (Weapons)

Below you’ll find a list of all the weapons you can obtain from ToTN.
