Our Destiny 2: Upgrade Module farm guide explains how to earn Upgrade Modules to enhance your gear.

With the launch of Shadowkeep, Bungie’s tweaked a host of the game’s core systems, including how players go about upgrading their gear. Back in Years 1 and 2, players would spend Legendary Shards, Glimmer and Enhancement Cores to make their equipment stronger. However, Enhancement Cores were hard to come by and made the process more frustrating than it should’ve been.

To streamline the gear upgrade process, Bungie has introduced Upgrade Modules, Ascendant Shards and Enhancement Prisms into the mix. Upgrade Modules are one of the most useful currencies out of the lot, as they allow you to infuse a piece of gear so it’s at a much higher power level than before.

It’s getting hold of them that can be a little tricky, so we’ll guide you through all the various ways to do so just below.

Destiny 2: How to farm Upgrade Modules

At the moment of writing, there are only a few ways you can earn Upgrade Modules in Destiny 2:

  • Purchase from the Gunsmith: Head to the Gunsmith in the Tower and you can buy Upgrade Modules for 1 Enhancement Core, 10 Legendary Shards, 5,000 Glimmer and 25 of two randomly selected planetary materials.
  • Weekly Bounties: The Gunsmith has offer two Weekly Bounties which will reward you with one Upgrade Module each, as well as XP and planetary materials.
  • Season Pass: You can earn a total of 19 Upgrade Modules via the free tiers of the Season of the Undying pass.
  • Nightfall Strike: Upgrade Modules can also drop from the Nightfall Strike: The Ordeal.

Other essential Shadowkeep guides:

What do Upgrade Modules do?

In the most basic terms, Upgrade Modules allow you to raise a piece of gear’s power level to that of another piece of gear. However, the latter will be destroyed in the process.

It’s extremely useful as you can raise one of your favourite pieces of gear to your current power level, using another which you don’t really have any use for.

We’d recommend holding off on infusing gear and using up your Upgrade Modules as you’re levelling, though - especially if you’re playing through Shadowkeep for the first time. You’ll level so fast that you’re infusions will become redundant. Try and wait until you’ve hit the soft cap at 900 power, and even then, we’d still hold off until you’ve hit 920+.
