Our Destiny 2 New Light guide explains how free to play will work, the release date, and the content that will be available.
Destiny 2 will add a new free to play mode in September this year, known as A New Light. The news was revealed by publisher Bungie yesterday evening, and as part of a wider briefing about the overall future of the game.
Only a small amount of information about the free to play element has been confirmed so far, but we wanted to get the first edition of our New Light guide live so you have access to everything you need to know.
As new details are confirmed, so we'll update this article with all the latest information. Pop a note in the comments if there's anything you think we've missed and we'll add an update.
When will Destiny 2 go free to play
The release date for New Light has been confirmed as September 17th 2019. If this changes at all in the coming months, we'll update our advice here.
What is New Light?
New Light has been described by the developers as a way for new Destiny players to get in the game.
A common complaint is that new players face many hours of play before they can catch up with their friends and join in with social activities together.
You'll start off at the same place all Guardians first appeared: The Cosmodrome. After completing initial missions you'll make your way to the Tower. At this point you'll have access to a wide variety of activities.
What content is available in New Light?
Bungie has confirmed a number of activities that New Light players will be able to participate in:
- The full base Destiny 2 game
- All of Destiny 2's Year 1 content
- Every world will be available in free roam and all bounties will be open
- Co-op Strikes with friends and matchmaking
- All competitive multiplayer PVP maps
- Destiny 2 Year 1 Raids, including Leviathan
- Full access to the Gambit mode
That's it for the first edition of our Destiny 2 free to play guide. We'll have more details for you in the run up to launch, and as Bungie confirms them.
