Our Artifact Hero guide contains a list of confirmed heroes, likely heroes for the roster and further details of hero mechanics.

When Valve's Artifact goes live a little later on this year on PC (mid-2019 on mobile devices), we know that the game will launch with 280 base cards and a total of 44 heroes. These eroes determine the kind of deck and spells you can play in any given game, and so your choice of hero is going to have a huge effect on the kind of strategy you can employ.

In this first edition of our guide to Artifact's heroes, we've produced a complete breakdown of how the hero system works, along with a list of heroes that are likely to appear in the game. Although official details are quite thin on the ground, the community has been furiously poring over every last drop of information, and we now have a pretty solid understanding of who's likely to be making an appearance in the game.

In time, and as new information is confirmed by Valve, we'll be able to bring you breakout articles about each individual hero, along with strategy tips and advice for extracting the most value from each one. That won't happen until we get our hands on the game for ourselves, but for now you should find this guide to be a very useful insight into this side of Artifact.

How do Heroes work in Artifact?

As mentioned in the introduction there'll be 44 heroes in Artifact, but it's important to note that they are spread across four different categories, or "suits". These suits provide its member heroes with a broad sense of their overall flavour, and they're broken down as follows:

Black - These characters have been described by others as assassin-like, and capable of interacting with other boards (or lanes) beyond the one they're currently situated on.

Blue - Prefer to sling arcane anarchy around on the board. These hero types start off relatively weak, but become more powerful over the course of a game. Probably best not to take your eyes off these guys for too long...

Green - Think green, think healing of course. With these heroes, you'll be able to restore health on the board or provide advantageous combat buffs to allies.

Red - These guys are your brutish, tank-like and melee-orientated bruiser characters that pack a lot of clout.

Note also that you'll be able to equip your Heroes with various items, and there are three slots in total - one for a weapon, one for a piece of armour, and one for some kind of health buff. As you work your way through the three game boards, you'll get the chance to purchase new items.

If that all sounds a little bit too confusing incidentally, we highly recommend heading over to our core Artifact guide. That'll get you up to speed on every aspect of the game!

Who are the heroes in Artifact?

Redditor recycledaily has been busy compiling a list of likely Heroes for the launch version of Artifact, based largely on the handful of screenshots and shakey-cam footage that's come out of the recent press reveal.

According to Reddit, these are the heroes that we are very likely to see at launch, assuming none of them are removed from the build between now and then.

  • Axe
  • Bristleback

  • Abaddon
  • Beastmaster
  • Drow Ranger
  • Earthshaker
  • Necrophos
  • Ogre Magi
  • Sniper
  • Ursa
  • Venomancer

Regarding the following characters, these have not been confirmed as playable in the current build but have featured in the various pieces of artwork that have been released over the last 24 hours or so.

That means they might make an appearance in the form of ability cards, or purely as promotional artwork.

  • Anti-Mage
  • Bounty Hunter
  • Lion
  • Death Prophet
  • Lina
  • Meepo
  • Enchantress
  • Nightstalker

  • Windranger

That wraps up the first edition to our guide to all the heroes in Artifact! We'll be back with a second update as soon as we learn more.
