Hello and welcome to the new look Metabomb!
You'll notice that quite a lot has changed on the site this morning, and so I wanted to put together a post about the new design. First though, and to explain why we've made the changes we have, it's helpful to outline a little of the history of Metabomb and the motivation behind starting it.
As some of you will already know Metabomb is part of the Gamer Network family of sites, which includes the likes of Eurogamer, USGamer and VG247. Towards the end of 2014, I'd found myself playing Hearthstone pretty much to the exclusion of everything else, but we didn't really have any sites that focused on specific games.
I wanted to see if it was possible to dig deep into a game like Hearthstone, and produce a successful website dedicated to a single title. Fortunately it proved popular enough for us to expand into Overwatch last year, which itself went on to prove that there was a real appetite for this kind of dedicated coverage. As we experimented with further games though, it became clear that the current design really wasn't working as the site grew bigger.
Rather than having a collection of entirely separate sites sitting very loosely under the Metabomb name, we felt it was time to bring everything together under one roof, while still making sure each game held onto its own separate space. The end result that you see today is the culmination of a huge amount of hard work by our tech and design teams, and I'm very excited to see these changes go live.
From the homepage, you'll be able to view all of the latest news, features and guides that we've published across every game and in one place. This is handy if you play multiple titles and want an idea of what's happening across the whole site, and without having to check up on completely different websites.
If you click on a game name at the top though, you'll find a version of the site dedicated entirely to that title - a bit like how things used to be, albeit with an improved design. You can also browse through categories such as hero guides, map guides and so on from these game hubs - just like before - and the search bar will help you find articles from the archive as well.
At the top of each article and game page, you'll also see a bar of related articles. We'll be using this space to highlight other articles that we think you should be interested in, based on the one you're currently reading. It will take some time to get this curation just right, but I hope you'll find this a great way of discovering new Metabomb features that you might not otherwise have been aware of.
Those are the main changes on the site, then, but there's more!
Welcome Ed Thorn
I'm delighted to introduce you all to Metabomb's new Staff Writer Ed Thorn.
Ed's already produced some knock-out stuff for Overwatch since joining the team earlier this month. As well as introducing him officially, I also wanted to highlight a few of his pieces that should give you a taste of things to come on the site:
- The best Genji players in the world
- Hanzo’s buffs are a welcome but broken change for the hero
- 9 Advanced Soldier: 76 tips that will change the way you play
As well as working closely with me to expand our Overwatch coverage in the months ahead, Ed will also be taking the lead on Destiny 2, while I continue working on our ever-growing collection of Hearthstone articles. I'm sure you'll make him feel very welcome.
If you find any bugs, have any questions about the redesign or what we do at Metabomb in general, feel free to drop me a line at email@example.com, or get in touch on Twitter @BeddersJ if you prefer.
Thanks as always for the support you've given us as we've grown over the last few years.
John Bedford, Editor-in-Chief
