Our always updated guide on how to play the Feral Druid specialization in World of Warcraft.

From the moment a Night Elf transformed into a powerful panther mid-run in World of Warcraft’s first ever intro video - over 12 years ago - a lot of people fell in love with the Feral Druid specialisation, and it has never since waned in popularity, despite several re-designs. It also currently has one of the most challenging and unforgiving gameplay styles in World of Warcraft though, and so we’ve put together this Feral Druid guide to help ease you into the basics.

The core gameplay challenge in playing a Feral Druid is that there are a lot of balls to juggle. On the one hand, the Feral Druid needs to manage combo point generation with energy expenditure just like a Rogue. On the other, they also need to keep track of - and constantly refresh - damage-over-time effects on their targets, if they hope to be effective.

To help with this, we heavily recommend the activation of the Nameplates function in Blizzard’s UI (by default, pressing V) and possibly even choosing the Larger Nameplates option in the Names tab of the Interface options menu. This will put your enemies’ names front and center in your screen, along with the duration of your damage-over-time effects just above.

The reward for all the work that this challenging spec requires is a very solid damage output in all single-target and two to three target fights, incredible mobility, and a talent selection so versatile that you can adapt to most situations on a per-fight basis. Plus the bragging rights that come with performing well in a specialisation that is notoriously difficult to grapple with.

Initially, we’ll outline a talent build that is focused on reducing micromanagement while still offering good performance, and detail a rotation to go along with it. In future iterations of the guide, we’ll add an expert-level talent build and the more complex rotation that that entails, as well as a section that offers guidance on how to best upgrade your Artifact Weapon, plus some discussion about the most important stats and how to balance them in your gear.

Feral Druid talent build

While this talent choice won’t maximise your damage output, it will get you very close to peak performance, while making Feral gameplay slightly more accessible - in practice, you can use this build for levelling and any non-Mythic endgame content.

Level Talent Option Reason for Choice
15 Blood Scent - Your melee abilities in Cat Form have a 10% increased critical strike chance on targets with a Bleed effect. Placing Bleed effects on your targets will be your bread-and-butter as a Feral Druid, so this is a huge boost to your overall damage output.
30 Displacer Beast - Teleports you up to 20 yards forward, activating Cat Form and increasing your movement speed by 50% for 2 sec. This is a very nice mobility option to have in addition to your regular Dash, and can easily get you out of tight spots in dungeons or raids.
45 Balance Affinity - You gain Astral Influence: Increases the range of all of your abilities by 5 yards. You also learn: Moonkin Form, Starsurge, Lunar Strike, Solar Wrath ,Sunfire. Disregard the extra abilities, as the true game-changer here is the extra attack range, which will enable you to stay at a safer distance during raid and dungeon content.
60 Mighty Bash - Invokes the spirit of Ursoc to stun the target for 5 sec. Usable in all shapeshift forms. This is a nice stun that you should make sure to use periodically.
75 Soul of the Forest - Your finishing moves grant 12 Energy per combo point. This will ensure you never have to wait long for your energy to replenish.
90 Sabertooth - Ferocious Bite deals 15% increased damage and always refreshes the duration of Rip. A key choice, this will simplify managing and maintaining your Rip bleed effect.
100 Moment of Clarity - Omen of Clarity now affects the next 3 Shreds, Thrashes, or Swipes and increases their damage by 15%. Your maximum Energy is increased by 30. An overall boost to your energy pool and several important abilities, all passive, with no added burden to your rotation.

Feral Druid rotation

While energy management, combo point management, and bleed effect (damage-over-time) management are all at the core of a good Feral rotation, these are not of equal importance. Maintaining your Bleed effects - Rake and Rip - on as many targets as possible is your highest priority.

Another thing to look out for is your Omen of Clarity procs. Any of your auto-attacks can trigger an Omen of Clarity, leading to your next three Shred, Trash or Swipe being free to cast and dealing extra damage. As you can’t stack Omens of Clarity - while one is unused, you will miss out on any additional Omens that your subsequent auto-attacks would generate - you want to spend these as quickly as possible.

Feral Druid rotation - Single target

This is the sequence of abilities we advise when facing a single target.

Action Condition / Further Instructions
1 Open with Rake If you can open from Stealth.
2 Berserk If the fight will last at least 20 more seconds.
3 Tiger’s Fury If under 30 Energy or Berserk is active.
4 Ashamane’s Frenzy (Artifact Weapon ability) If Tiger's Fury is active and at 2 or less Combo Points
5 Rake If not already on target, or with 4 or less seconds remaining.
6 Rip If not already on target, and at 5 Combo Points.
7 Ferocious Bite If Rip is on target, and at 5 Combo Points.
8 Shred To generate Combo Points, up to 5.
9 Repeat from 2

Feral Druid rotation - Multiple targets

When facing two opponents, your task gets much harder as you need to alternate between them to apply and refresh your Rakeand Rip bleed effects. You should try to do so with 3 enemies as well, while weaving Thrash into the rotation as described below. At 4 or more enemies, you will start making use of Swipe, but keeping your bleeds on all targets will be virtually impossible to achieve.

6 Thrash If not already on target, and only when 3 or more enemies are present and in range.
7 Rip If not already on target, and at 5 Combo Points.
8 Ferocious Bite If Rip is on target, and at 5 Combo Points.
9 Swipe To generate Combo Points, at or over 4 targets.
10 Shred To generate Combo Points, under 4 targets.
11 Repeat from 2
