Our Season 5 guide for Overwatch contains start times and dates, as well as details of the rewards and rankings for taking part.
With the approach of Overwatch's first anniversary comes the fifth season of competitive play for the game, and we're finally starting to get a few details of what we can expect to see when things get under way. In this article, you'll be able to find details of the start date, expected rewards, rankings and what have you.
This is the first edition of our guide, and so much of what's contained here is based on how previous seasons have worked. We've clearly marked where that's the case, and will be making regular updates as and when new information is release by Blizzard. Stay tuned for updates...
Season 5 start date and time

Season 5 placement system
We've had no indication that Blizzard intends to change the placement system for Season 5, and so for now we're assuming things will stay the same as they've been over the last six months or so.
Overwatch's placement system requires you to play a total of ten matches. Your performance in these matches determines - in part - where you'll be placed within the new season's ranks. From here you'll simply have to battle your way up, however low you might have been placed on the ladder.
Note that your starting position is not determined by these placement matches alone. Your finishing position in the previous season is combined with these results to dictate where you'll start off. Sorry, but there are no quick ways out of elo hell here!

Season 5 Skill Rating Tiers
Here's how the ranking system shaped up in the previous season, and we will assume for now that the same system will be used going forwards. We will of course update this section if there are any changes.
|Season 5 Rank||Points||Rewards (CP)|
Season 5 rewards
Typically, you receive a certain number of Competitive Points for reaching specific thresholds at the end of each Season (see the table above). These can be spent on unlocking fancy gold-plated guns for your favourite heroes.
You also receive a special spray and a player icon just for completing your placement matches, while the highest ranking players get an animated version of the Spray as well.
This approach has been so consistent over the last four Seasons that we expect at least these current rewards to make it into Season 5. Once the new season is live, we'll grab all the assets and pop them in here so you can get an early look!
