Our Overwatch Lunar New Year 2018 (Year of the Dog) guide contains all of the skins and game mode updates expected to make a return with this year's Chinese New Year event.
Overwatch's next special event will follow on from last year's Chinese New Year celebration with the usual assortment of new limited-period Legendary skins and game modes. It's the Year of the Dog this time around, and that's widely predicted to be the name of the event, given that last year's was Year of the Rooster.
In our Year of the Dog guide we've pulled together all of the information that's currently known about the 2018 version of the event, although we expect many of the blanks to be filled in as the celebration gets nearer. For now, we've pulled all of the information confirmed in the recent Developer Update video, and also looked back at last year's event for an idea of what we can expect this time around.
Expect many updates to this article, in other words, but the following should more than whet your appetite while we wait to hear more direct from Blizzard
Overwatch: Year of the Dog - Start date and time
Last year's Year of the Rooster Overwatch event began on 24th January 2017. That tied in neatly with the date for Chinese New Year, which began on 28th January 2017.
Things are a bit different for 2018, however, as the Year of the Dog actually begins on the 16th February 2018. It simply wouldn't make sense for the in-game event to take place in January this year.
For that reason, we expect the Overwatch Lunar New Year 2018 event to begin on Tuesday 13th February. It will likely conclude three weeks later on Monday 5th March 2018. Based on previous events, we expect Lunar New Year 2018 to begin and end at 11:00am PST, which is 7:00pm in the UK and 8:00pm in Europe.
Once we have official confirmation of the start date and times direct from Blizzard, we'll update this section of our guide right away.
Overwatch: Year of the Dog - Everything we know
Here's the recent Developer Update video which addresses Year of the Dog alongside other current events in the game. There's not a huge amount of information to go on here, but the relevant section begins at 5:20
So, game director Jeff Kaplan promises “significant changes players will be happy with” and says the team has “listened to feedback and will make changes”. All very cryptic - we'll have to wait for more official information to come out.
Overwatch: Year of the Dog - Skins
There were a total of 124 new items to unlock last year, and we expect a similar number to make an appearance for Year of the Rooster. Here's what was on offer last time around:
- 6 Epic Skins
- 7 Legendary Skins
- 3 Emotes
- 7 Victory Poses
- 23 Voice Lines
- 52 Sprays
- 3 Highlight Intros
- 23 Player Icons
Expect the following skins to make a return - and at a reduced price - along with a host of new high-end items to unlock at a much higher cost! As soon as the event update goes live we'll grab all of the assets straight from the client and pop them straight in here.
Overwatch: Year of the Dog - Capture the Rooster
Capture the Rooster was a new game mode introduced last year, and we wouldn't be at all surprised to see the devs build on the mode for 2018. Time to chase a puppy flag around the map, perhaps?
Capture the Rooster replaced Mystery Duel as the Brawl during the event, and saw two teams battle on a modified version of Lijiang Tower. The aim is to capture the opposing team's tag from their spawn room, then return it to their own spawn. If the flag-carrier dies, the flag gets dropped. If the other team nabs it back, it returns to the flag spawn point. Our Capture the Rooster guide contains loads of helpful advice on this new mode.
There were a few seasonal cosmetic upgrades for Lijiang Tower as well, both in Capture The Rooster and in general play. All three points of Lijiang Tower (Night Market, Garden and Control Center) were given a new year makeover, and it's practically a dead cert those changes will be back for Year of the Dog.
