Frozen Throne Mission guide - Upper Reaches

Decks and guides for beating every encounter in the Frozen Throne Mission content

Ahead of the release of Hearthstone's Whispers of the Old Gods, Blizzard decided to retire the Adventure format that had previously acted as a separator between the release of full-blooded card set expansions. If you weren't around for these single-player challenges, they allowed you to pay a fixed cost to unlock around 35 new cards over a number of weeks by beating various bosses drawn from the Warcraft universe.

Ahead of Un'Goro, we were promised that single-player content would return to the game in the form of Missions, which would be used to flesh out the story and origins of some of each expansion's signature cards. The new system didn't make the launch of Un'Goro, but we know they will now make their debut when Knights of the Frozen Throne is released this Thursday 10th August, when the doors of Icecrown Citadel open for brave adventurers...

In the second edition of our Icecrown Citadel Mission guide, we've got a quick breakdown of all of the confirmed information we have about this new single-player content. When we learn more we'll add the extra detail into our next update, and we'll be providing you with comprehensive guides to beating every encounter once the expansion is live as well!

Rise of the Knights of the Frozen Throne: Prologue and Lower Citadel

The first wing goes live on 10th August in the US, and 11th August in the Europe and Asia regions. For precise release times, check out our Icecrown Citadel launch times page.

You'll face the Lich King twice during the Mission release schedule - once at the beginning and once at the end!

Prologue Tips and Tricks

Trust us, you don't want this spoiled for you. Simply fire up the Prologue, follow the instructions and enjoy what happens. This is some of Blizzard's best Adventure (sorry, Mission) work yet and you just need to play through it for yourself - you can't fail!

Lower Citadel Tips and Tricks

Lord Marrowgar

Lord Marrowgar's hero power restores his health entirely, so what you really need here is some kind of one-turn-kill [OTK] deck. Consider using something like Combo Priest - the following deck list is pretty typical of the format:

PriestNeutral
2 x Crystalline Oracle2 x Deathlord
2 x Inner Fire2 x Faceless Manipulator
2 x Mind Vision
2 x Northshire Cleric
2 x Power Word: Shield
2 x Convert
2 x Divine Spirit
2 x Lightwell
2 x Radiant Elemental
2 x Shadow Word: Pain
2 x Curious Glimmerroot
2 x Thoughtsteal
2 x Shifting Shade

Deathbringer Saurfang

Deathbringer Saurfang has 20 Health rather than 30 but can only be damaged by weapons. That means it's time to bust out the old favourite Pirate Warrior. Try the following Wild deck on for size:

WarriorNeutral
2 x N'Zoth's First Mate1 x Patches the Pirate
2 x Upgrade!1 x Sir Finley Mrrgglton
2 x Fiery War Axe2 x Southsea Deckhand
1 x Forge of Souls2 x Bloodsail Raider
1 x Heroic Strike1 x Golakka Crawler
2 x Bloodsail Cultist2 x Ship's Cannon
2 x Frothing Berserker2 x Dread Corsair
2 x Death's Bite
2 x Kor'kron Elite
2 x Arcanite Reaper
1 x Gorehowl

Lady Deathwhisper

Lady Deathwhisper has 30 Health and a whopping 90 points of Armor. You have a 30 / 5 stat minion called Valithria Dreamwalker, but it can only attack when it's not damaged. Unfortunately, the boss's hero power damages all minions until they have one point of health - this happens at the start of each turn.

We recommend a Wild Priest deck with loads of healing, protection, and the ability to remove your minion's attack limitation through Silence:

PriestNeutral
2 x Circle of Healing2 x Annoy-o-Tron
2 x Silence2 x Bilefin Tidehunter
2 x Binding Heal2 x Earthen Ring Farseer
2 x Flash Heal2 x Stonehill Defender
2 x Northshire Cleric
2 x Power Word: Shield
2 x Lightwell
2 x Shadow Word: Pain
2 x Shadow Word: Death
2 x Darkshire Alchemist
2 x Holy Nova

Showdown with the Lich King: The Frozen Throne

The final wing of the Icecrown Citadel is now open and the final boss awaits you in the form of The Lich King himself.

Because a significant part of the challenge here is to beat the boss with all nine heroes, we've put together a separate Icecrown Citadel Lich King boss guide page with deck lists for beating him with every character - expect many updates to that guide over time.

Icecrown Citadel Mission FAQ

Here's an overview of what's been confirmed by Blizzard so far:

Watch on YouTube
  • All of the Mission content will be provided to all players completely free of charge.
  • You will have to beat eight separate Missions in order to finish Icecrown Citadel.
  • These Missions are spread across three different wings. It's yet to be confirmed whether all three will be available at launch, or whether the release of each one will be staggered like the old Adventures were.
  • Each time you beat a wing you'll receive a Knights of the Frozen Throne card pack for free.
  • When you've cleared all but the final Missions, you'll have to face off against the Lich King himself.
  • The Lich King will alter the tactics he uses to match the hero you choose to play as when you tackle this final challenge.
  • Your reward for beating the Lich King is a randomly selected Legendary Hero Card. These new cards allow you to transform your hero into an alternative Death Knight character with a new hero power.
