Hearthstone: Deck Tier List (Standard) - May 2017 (Season 38)

Our latest and updated list of the top decks to play in the current metagame.

Over the last few years, Metabomb has focused on producing a monthly round-up of the top decks being played in Hearthstone, complimented by our ever-growing collection of deck guides. While wanting to provide a solid snapshot of the latest metagame, we've previously shied away from producing a hard ranking of these decks, preferring instead to give you an overview of each hero's top three or four options. By taking this approach, we felt we could help you to quickly identify competitive decks for classes that you enjoy playing first and foremost, rather than feeling compelled to pick a particular one in order to climb the ladder effectively.

With all that said and done though, we know that some of you want to see a slightly different approach to our analysis of the current Hearthstone metagame, and do so with a fully ranked tier list that appraises the entire roster of popular decks from top to bottom. Well, back in the summer of last year we decided it was about time we started remedying that, and the end result here represents our eleventh (how time flies!) ranked evaluation of the Hearthstone metagame. We'll still provide a looser monthly round-up of the best Hearthstone decks per hero - just as we've always done - but if you're first and foremost looking for a way to climb the ladder quickly, then this should hopefully give you some useful guidance.

A few words on how we've chosen to go about building our own list of the top decks in Hearthstone right now. First of all, we've considered the sort of wisdom-of-the-crowd insight into the metagame that we're all plugged into as avid players. We've also studied a number of the other tier lists that are out there and then made our own tweaks where we feel that certain decks are over or under-valued. We feel pretty confident that the end result represents a deck tier list that reflects the broader state of the metagame, whether you're playing at Legend or still climbing the middling stages of the ladder. Note, however, that decks within each tier are listed alphabetically, rather than in order per tier.

As the metagame changes in the weeks and months ahead, so will the tier list featured in this article. Note that there's an unavoidable element of personal preference and aptitude for playstyle to take into consideration here, and so it's natural that different players will rank certain decks somewhat higher or lower. As always, we believe that you'll win more games using a deck that you've mastered and enjoy playing, instead of one that we say is superior by a single tier. By definition, the deck that you find the most success with is the best one! Nevertheless, we'd love to hear your feedback in the comments section about any additional decks you think should be included here.

With that out of the way, here's the eleventh edition of our Hearthstone deck tier list. We hope you'll enjoy this regularly updated, alternative take on the current metagame, and let us know in the comments if there's anything else you'd like to see us cover in the future!

Editor's note: May Update #3: We've given our tier list a final revision as we approach the end of the month. Things should be stabilising pretty quickly now, but we'll of course revise this article again once the new season of competitive play begins.

I disagree with a few of these rankings.

First of all, Taunt Warrior and Quest Rogue should definitely be moved up to Tier 1, especially Quest Rogue. They're two of the most powerful decks in this meta. Maybe move Miracle Rogue up as well, not sure. I feel like it's between Tier 1 and Tier 2, but if I had to pick one, I'd say Tier 1.

Also, I'd swap Aggro Mage and Freeze Mage. Freeze Mage is a very prominent and frequently used deck in this meta, but Aggro Mage? Eh, not so much. Not that it's a weak deck, but I just don't see it being Tier 2 with the likes of Midrange Hunter and Dragon Priest.

Other than those minor changes, I agree with the list.

    @BetaMomb Good feedback, thanks.

Generally speaking I think you can shuffle any deck up or down a rung based on things like general aptitude and personal preferences - also your position on the ladder. Things can be very different in different sections of the metagame, and it's hard to reflect that in a one-size-fits-all tier list!

I'll be revisiting this again in a couple of week and will take your input on board.

I agree with BetaMomb. Quest Rogue kicks my ass regularly, against other "Tier 1" decks like the Paladin ones. Are people really seeing that much success with Murloc Paladin?

I really don't agree with this list at all based on ladder performances. Being rank 3 on day 4 of the season I tend to see a lot of aggro druid, midrange paladin (not really aggro, midrange is definitely a higher tier), pirate warrior, inner fire priest (how is this only tier 3?), and quest / miracle rogue, with freeze mage and midrange hunter sprinkled in. I never see dragon priest, token shaman, taunt warrior, or tempo based mage decks though.

Super quick update. I've made a couple of quick changes regarding Quest Rogue and Taunt Warrior as they're definitely in need of a boost.

I don't want to make snap decisions about anything else this late (UK time) on a Friday though. I'll bring the planned mid-month update forward and reappraise things on Monday.

Things are moving pretty quickly in the metagame right now - especially across different sections of the ladder - and this is going to take a few passes to get just right. Thanks for your patience and your feedback to of course!

  • I've played with Quest Rogue, is REALLY strong but have a lot of failures like the luck needness, need A LOT of luck to cicle rightly.

Playing about 5 hours per day all days of April I saw Taunt Warrior is truly better than Quest Rogue, I think it's one of the bests decks these days. I saw a lot of Quest Rogue Users in April but in the last week I saw just me playing that shit. I used this to climb some (rank 9 to 7).

Paladin seems to be the best class, really the BEST CLASS. Murloc is too much powerful and Middle is another "Oh my..." deck.

I think Middle Hunter is very good but kills itself fast. Just win in turn 6-7 ou lose in turn 8-10. I've climbed the ladder of April with it (rank 20 to 9), sometimes it seems be the BEST and the user can think "Nothing can stop me!!", then you get a Paladin.

Conclusions... To !-M-E-!, Murloc and Midrange Paladins are just better than the bests. Quest Rogue is truly tier 2 (much luck requested). Taunt Warrior is overpower even just really starting to play in turn 4-5. Midrange Hunter is TRULY the easiest way to climb to rank 10, climb more with it depends of your luck.

@lucasgonçalvesdemelo Can't say I agree with you. I've played Quest Rogue for a while, and it's a very flexible deck; there's plenty of easy bounce targets and ways to bounce them, and if you don't get any good bounce cards, you can rely on the Flame Elementals from Fire Fly and Igneous Elemental instead. I can consistently complete my quest by turn 5 or earlier.

Taunt Warrior, while a very strong deck that deserves Tier 1, isn't quite as strong as you say it is. I beat it many times (probably more than I lose to it), and I struggle far more against other decks. Heck, yesterday I beat one with ease using a really crummy deck I made for my "Play 50 Paladin Cards" quest.

I've never battled a Midrange Paladin so I can't say I much about it. Murloc Paladin is a very strong deck, but not unbeatable; I've defeated it on quite a few occasions. Whether it's better than the best is debatable, but it's certainly one of the strongest decks in the game.

I agree about Midrange Hunter, though. However, I think it's still strong past Rank 10 and even to Legend, and not completely shut down by Paladin.

@Zabusa97 Try to keep in mind that decks are listed alphabetically within tiers, rather than as an absolute overall list.

I've explained this in the intro but just to be absolutely clear, I'm not suggesting that Midrange Hunter is ranked five spots higher than Taunt Warrior.

@Bedders I would put it last in tier 2 ... even this time the hunter is one of the poorest classes.

@Zabusa97 Midrange Hunter is an incredibly strong deck, though. Hunter is a powerful class at the moment.

I've brought forward our mid-month review and updated the tier list to take account of a pretty fast-moving metagame.

Please keep in mind that any comments above this one refer to an older version of the list!

I know this is already the second tier list suggestion I've made this month, but I just want to get off my chest what changes I feel are necessary.

Elemental Shaman should be moved down to Tier 3. It's just not that prevalent in this meta, and there are many stronger options.

Control Mage, Miracle Rogue, Freeze Mage, and Dragon Priest should all be moved to Tier 2. They're all very strong and widely used decks that have consistently high win rates. Especially Control Mage, it's the strongest deck Mage has, and Mage is currently one of the strongest classes.

And then Aggro Burn Mage should be removed altogether, because it's the same deck as Control Mage.

Other possible (but not quite necessary) changes: Control Mage could even be moved to Tier 1, it's that strong. Control Priest could be moved to Tier 3 (I feel like it's Tier 2.5). Aggro Druid could be moved to Tier 1. Silence Priest could be moved to Tier 2.

@BetaMomb I'm actually revising the list tomorrow and have planned some of the changes you've mentioned! The Burn Mage / Control Mage thing has also been worked out.
