Our Tempo Rogue deck guide features the best deck list for Season 44, with Mulligan advice, strategy tips, card combos and synergies.

Tempo Rogue is one of those Hearthstone deck concepts that isn't new for the game by any means, but is enjoying something of a resurgence in the post-nerf Frozen Throne meta. The idea behind playing this kind of deck is to begin fielding an aggressive collection of minions onto the board at the very start of a match, and then slowly snowball an overwhelming threat against the opponent.

In our Tempo Rogue deck guide, we've highlighted one of the most promising deck lists for this archetype right now, and provided a basic overview of the strategy involved in playing it. We've also added in some basic Mulligan advice which should help you start each match on a strong footing. We've then also listed all of the card combos that power the deck - study these carefully to get a feel for how all these powerful cards come together.

If this deck continues to grow in popularity, then we'll update and expand this guide over time. If you need help with any aspect of playing it now though, just ask your questions in the comments and we'll do our best to help you get started.

UPDATE 30/10/2017

We've only made a handful of changes to our recommended Tempo Rogue deck this month, but do make sure you import the new version into your client. We'll keep an eye on this one throughout November, and make any changes we feel are necessary in the run up to the next Hearthstone expansion.

Tempo Rogue deck list and strategy

Because Tempo Rogue has only just shot up the rankings following the recent round of nerfs, it's still subject to a lot of refinement.

With that said, this is proving to be the most popular version of the archetype at the time of publishing this article. We will update it over time to keep it current with the latest developments in the Hearthstone meta.

The objective here is to start fielding your cheap minions onto the board nice and quickly, and then gradually ramp up your threat from there using whatever buffs and Battlecry effect you have available to you. In general you should play this deck quite aggressively, although it can be worth trading in the early game, and at specific stages of the game where a big AOE clear by your opponent may be imminent.

You've a little Elemental and Pirate synergy to help you get off to a good start here (not to mention crisp removal in the form of Backstab), but Prince Keleseth is arguably the most important card in the deck. The earlier you can play this minion, the more minions will benefit from that exceptional buffing ability. Getting this card out on Turn 2 increases your win-rate astronomically, so dig deep for it in every match.

Keep one eye on the timing of your Elemental plays as well, as certain cards in this deck provide a bonus effect if you played an Elemental on the previous turn. As a Rogue player you should be well-accustomed to planning your turns carefully anyway, but always take a moment to review the cards in your hand and how you might want to execute a future turn to optimal effect.

A final word here regarding Edwin VanCleef. This is of course another way of building up a terrifying minion presence thanks to the cheap spells at your disposal, just be very wary of a single-target removal effect that your opponent might have in their hand. As amazing as this minion can be on a good day, it can also prove to be a real heartbreaker on occasion...

In every single match-up Prince Keleseth is your prime target. Never ever throw this character back, as the impact he has on every stage of the game is showstoppingly good. Other must-keep minions include Southsea Deckhand, Swashburglar and Fire Fly, and you should consider keeping the bonus Elemental granted by the latter card for empowering a minion in the late-game.

In terms of spells, Backstab is the one you want to keep in just about every match-up, as it provides such a crisp and clinical removal for the early game. As a Tempo deck you really can't afford to lose the board in the early stages of any match-up, and Backstab provides disgustingly good value in this regard.

That's about all of the advice you need in the current metagame, but if things become more complex over time, we'll add some nuanced advice here in the form of a hero-by-hero Mulligan chart.

Tempo Rogue tips, combos and synergies

A Rogue deck like this is only a strong as the synergies contained within it. Here are the most important card combos you need to commit to memory when playing the Tempo Rogue:

A Rogue deck like this is only a strong as the synergies contained within it. Here are the most important card combos you need to commit to memory when playing the Tempo Rogue:

- If Patches the Pirate is still hidden away in your deck, any other Pirate class of card you play will pull him into play free of charge. In this particular version of the deck, that's Swashburglar, Southsea Deckhand and Southsea Captain.

- Should you be holding a weapon when he's played onto the board, Southsea Deckhand will be able to attack immediately.

- Edwin VanCleef grows by +2 / +2 of stats for each card you played before him on the same turn. You've a lot of cheap cards in this deck, and so it's possibly to build a pretty mighty minion here.

- If Southsea Captain is taken out of action, then any other Pirates being buffed by this minion will lose their bonus stats. The effect is not permanent.

- Whenever Shaku, the Collector attacks a minion or the enemy hero, a random card from your opponent's class will be added to your hand. It's good to make your move with this minion before any others, as you'll want to know what all of your options are.

- SI:7 Agent dishes out a targeted two points of damage when played, if you played another card earlier on in the same turn. Common triggers for this effect are The Coin or Backstab - this allowa you to deal with an early-game problem efficiently, while simultaneously establishing dominance of the board with a minion of your own.

- If there's at least one other minion on the board at the end of your turn, Cobalt Scalebane will assign it an extra three points of permanent Attack power. If you have multiple minions out in play, the target of this buff will be randomly selected.

- The bonus Elemental creature created by Fire Fly makes a great enabler for cards like Cold Blood, SI:7 Agent and Vilespine Slayer. Consider keeping it in your hand for a cheap piece of a future combo.

- Bonemare will not only grant a targeted friendly minion an impressive four extra points of Attack and Health, it'll also give them the Taunt ability. The end result is as solid minion on the board, now protected by a significantly improved buddy!

- You can only target an enemy minion to be destroyed by Vilespine Slayer if you've already played another card on the current turn.

- Likewise, Plague Scientist can only grant a friendly minion the Poisonous effect if you've played something else beforehand.
