Our Spiteful Summoner Priest guide features the best deck list for Season 46 (January 2018), along with Mulligan advice, card combos and strategy tips.

Spiteful Summoner Priest is a brand new Hearthstone deck which leans heavily on the titular card for its strength. Why is this card so critical? Well, when played it'll reveal a random spell from your deck and summon a random minion of the same cost. Given that most deck lists only feature the Free From Amber and Mind Control spells, you're guaranteed a pretty big play from it.

You have plenty of other toys to play with alongside this card, and in our guide to this new archetype we've highlighted a particularly powerful deck list you can start with. We've also got some Mulligan tips, a teardown of every combo you have to play around with, and in a future update we'll be providing detailed strategy advice.

Although not quite a Tier 1 deck at the moment, Spiteful Summoner Priest is nevertheless proving very popular, and Priest fans shouldn't find it an expensive option to upgrade to in the Kobolds and meta either.

UPDATE - 15th JANUARY 2018

We've taken the opportunity to make a mid-month pass on our Spiteful Summoner guide, but don't feel that any changes to the recommended deck list are required at this point. We have, however, expanded on our strategy advice, and also fleshed out the Mulligan section a little further. We'll continue updating this guide further over time.

Spiteful Summoner Priest deck list and strategy

This is the best version of Spiteful Summoner Priest that we're aware of at this stage of the expansion, although as it's a new archetype you should expect at least a handful of changes over the next month or so.

In aggro match-ups your prime consideration should be about keeping the opponent from building an increasingly deadly board presence. Duskbreaker is a hugely important card in this context and is one of the Priest's best new cards in the Kobolds expansion. If you can pull off a decent clear and enter the mid-game in command of the board, you are highly favoured to out-value the opponent.

Against control opponents you'll want to play things a little more aggressively, while still being conscious of both your Health total and the amount of resources you commit into a potential board-wipe. You do need to burn through as much of their removal as you can though, so that they struggle to make a meaningful comeback following your Spiteful Summoner / Free From Amber plays.

Northshire Cleric and Corridor Creeper are fantastic general purpose keeps in the early game, and it's always worth hanging onto one of these apiece if they show up in your initial card options.

Against aggro decks specifically you will gain particular value from Tar Creeper (for defense) and Duskbreaker for obvious board-clearing power. In more control-orientated match-ups you can usually afford to keep slower / later plays such as Curious Spiteful Summoner, Curious Glimmeroot and Drakonid Operative.

You do need to give a certain amount of thought to cards like Netherspite Historian though. If you can tie her up with a neat Dragon synergy, she's probably worth keeping in your opening hand.

Spiteful Summoner Priest tips, card combos and synergies

As this is a brand-new deck for Kobolds and Catacombs you are strongly encouraged to take a bit of time reading through the following combos before taking this list to the ladder!

- Every time a minion is healed, Northshire Cleric will add a card to your hand. Note that this effect stacks if multiple minions are topped up.

- Netherspite Historian will allow you to select one of three random Dragons, but for the effect to go off you must already have a Dragon card in your hand. In this version of the deck you have access to the following: Duskbreaker, Twilight Drake, Cobalt Scalebane and Drakonid Operative.

- Shadow Ascendant grants another friendly minion an extra + 1 / +1 of stats at the end of your turn. If you have multiple possible targets, one will be selected at random.

- Tar Creeper only has its bonus Attack power during the opponent's turn. Try to plan things out ahead of their turn so you can make life as difficult as possible for them.

- When you play Twilight Drake onto the board, it'll gain one extra Health for each remaining card that exists in your hand.

- Cobalt Scalebane will choose a random friendly minion at the end of your turn and give it an extra 3 points of Attack. Note that this creature cannot target itself.

- Drakonid Operative will allow you to Discover a card from your opponent's deck, but like the Netherspite Historian you must have another Dragon in your hand at the time for this Battlecry to be triggered.

- Your cheapest spell in this deck costs 8 Mana, and so Spiteful Summoner is guaranteed to summon a random minion that costs at least that much.

- If Corridor Creeper is sat in your hand it will become one Mana cheaper every time a minion on either side of the board is destroyed.

- Grand Archivist plays similarly to Spiteful Summoner in that there are no bad spells to pull from this deck, and you're guaranteed to get a big play out of it!
