Midrange Hunter is a deck that's been popular in Hearthstone since time immemorial. It has the power to take a controlling position against more aggressive opponents, yet can quickly switch to a more aggressive stance of its own when you need to finish a game against slower opponents who threaten to starve you of cards. Suffice to say, a broad understanding of the state of the current metagame will go a long way when it comes to winning more games with this archetype.

There are quite a few changes in the latest version of Midrange Hunter, with notable appearances by Barnes and The Lich King this time around. We'll be surprised if things change between now and the launch of Kobolds and Catacombs, but you'd be advised to make sure your deck list is up to date with the current meta.

The fundamentals of playing Midrange Hunter haven't really changed with Frozen Throne, although there are a few new toys to play with, particularly in the late-game. The aim is still very much to frustrate opponents who are playing very aggressively, while moving a little faster against slower opponents. Just keep one eye on potential AOE plays your opponent could make in the near future, leaving themselves with a very favourable board. Under these conditions, you would place a great emphasis on control.
You've got plenty of early-game options to ensure you start building a board from the very start of a match, and you should try to get your hero power off whenever possible once the mid-game comes around. It's a great way of increasing pressure, while at the same time conserving cards. You won't run out of cards too quickly with this deck, but the hero power is a surprisingly effective way of getting you over the finishing line, used across the entire length of a match.
This archetype's been shaken up quite a bit with the new expansion, so you'd be wise to refamiliarise yourself with all of the combos outlined further down the page. It's from these that you'll gain a greater understanding of the strategy involved with playing the Midrange Hunter right now.

Midrange Hunter Mulligan guide
With Midrange Hunter you want to focus on making every drop of Mana count in the first few turns. For that reason, you should always value cards like Alleycat and Kindly Grandmother very highly. Crackling Razormaw is another outstanding keep if you have Turn 1 taken care of, and can boost that Beast on the follow-up turn.
If you're confident you're up against a slower deck, then you might be able to justify keeping something a little heavier here such as Animal Companion, Eaglehorn Bow or even Barnes. Don't dig any deeper than that though - you're slower than an aggro deck, but not that much slower.
If you're up against Rogue or Warrior you are strongly encouraged to hold onto Golakka Crawler, as it's almost guaranteed to get a Pirate minion to chomp through. The great thing about this card though is that it's not a terrible Beast in its own right, and makes another fine target for Crackling Razormaw. You wouldn't go digging for it, but you're not sorry to see it in your hand by any means.
Midrange Hunter tips, combos and synergies
With an influx of new cards comes a whole new load of synergies to think about. Midrange Hunter may be a bit of an old dog at this point, but it's certainly picked up a few new tricks with the latest expansion.
Here's a quick look at some of the most crucial combos - old and new - that you need to keep in mind as you play through every game.
- Every Beast class of card will empower Kill Command and have it dish out five points of damage rather than the standard three.
- Each time a friendly Beast minion dies, your Scavenging Hyena gains +2 / +1 stats. Consider how sacrificing your Unleash the Hounds dogs can be used to powerful effect here.
- Houndmaster can be used to boost any Beast card and give it the Taunt characteristic as well.
- Golakka Crawler gains +1/+1 as it destroys a Pirate. You should always keep this card in your opening hand when playing Rogues and Warriors for this precise reason!
- Try to line the opponent's board up to get a preferential target for Deadly Shot. Use your own minions or Eaglehorn Bow to thin down the numbers and increase the chances of bagging the target you're most interested in.
- Don't worry too much about the penalty of Bittertide Hydra, but at the same time do be cautious against certain match-ups. You don't want a wide board of minions alongside this creature playing a Hunter, for example, as they can kill you by sacrificing their Unleash the Hounds minions into the Hydra!
- If you have a friendly Beast minion out in play, you can target it with Crackling Razormaw and put it through the Adapt process. This allows you to apply one of three buffs to it, randomly selected from a bigger pool of the following ten possibilities:

|Living Spores||Deathrattle: Summon two 1/1 Plants|

- Deathstalker Hunter does two damage to all enemy minions when played, grants you five points of Armor, and also adds a new Hero Power called Build-a-Beast. This lets you stitch together the stats and effects of Beasts which perished earlier in the match.
- Finally, The Lich King will grant you one of his cards at the end of each of your turns. He'll give you one randomly selected from the following pool of cards:
|2||Death Coil||Deal 5 damage to an enemy, or restore 5 Health to a friendly character.|
|2||Death Grip||Steal a minion from your opponent's deck and add it to your hand.|
|2||Obliterate||Destroy a minion. Your hero takes damage equal to its Health.|
|3||Death and Decay||Deal 3 damage to all enemies.|
|4||Anti-Magic Shell||Give your minions +2 / +2 and “Can't be targeted by spells or Hero Powers.”|
|5||Doom Pact||Destroy all minions. Remove the top card from your deck for each minion destroyed.|
|6||Army of the Dead||Remove the top 5 cards of your deck. Summony any minions removed.|
|7||Frostmourne||Deathrattle: Summon every minion killed by this [5 / 3] weapon.|
