Our Elemental Mage deck guide features the best deck list for Season 38, with Mulligan advice, strategy tips, card combos and synergies.
Elemental Mage is a Hearthstone deck that should be very familiar indeed to anyone who's dabbled with Tempo Mage in recent years. As the name suggests though, this particular archetype leans heavily into the new source of Elemental cards that have arrived with the Un'Goro expansion.
In this guide you'll find what should prove to be a pretty stable deck list for the new archetype, along with some Mulligan advice to help you choose a sensible starting hand. After that we've got a breakdown of the combos - old and new - that define this deck.
Before that though, let's take a quick look at the new cards that are included here. Our card hovers (which let you mouse over card names to see the art) are still being added to the system, so far now we've put a gallery of all the artwork just below these descriptions:
Pyros: This Legendary creature starts off as a 2/2. When it dies it's returned to your hand as a 6 Mana 6/6. When it dies again it comes back to your hand as a 10 Mana 10/10. That's it though!
Steam Surger: A 4 Mana 5/4 Elemental that rewards you with a Flame Geyser if you played another Elemental on the previous turn (this Elemental synergy is a recurring theme of this deck.
Flame Geyser: A 2 Mana spell that deals 2 damage and pops a 1/2 Elemental in your hand. Nice fuel for future Elemental plays.
Igneous Elemental: A 3 Mana 2/3 Elemental that grants two more of those 1/2 Elementals when it dies.
Tol'vir Stoneshaper: A 4 Mana 3/5 Elemental that gains Taunt and Divine Shield if you played an Elemental on the previous turn.
Elise the Trailblazer: This 5 Mana 5/5 has a Battlecry that adds an Un'Goro Pack to your hand.
Un'Goro Pack: This 2 Mana spell adds 5 randomly selected Journey to Un'Goro cards to your hand when it's played.
Servant of Kalimos: This 5 Mana 4/5 Elemental lets you discover a new Elemental if you played an Elemental on the last turn.
Blazecaller: A 7 Mana 6/6 that dishes out 5 bonus points of damage if you played an Elemental on the previous turn.

The main strategic consideration with this deck is to ensure you're always planning one or two turns ahead. Does playing an Elemental on your current turn empower the play on your next turn? If so, it might be worth playing out your curve a little inefficiently if it means you'll gain a stronger board in the long run.
We'll be fleshing out this strategy section of the guide once the launch frenzy has settled down a bit and we've been able to have some meaningful play time with this deck ourselves. In the meantime, check the combos section further down the page for an idea of how to play this deck.

Elemental Mage (Standard) Mulligan guide - May 2017
You can pretty much Mulligan this deck as you would for traditional Tempo Mage. Prime keeps here are Babbling Book, Mana Wyrm and Frostbolt. Pyros is presumably another auto-keep as well, so you can hopefully have it to play once again on Turn 6.
If you have The Coin, you might consider keeping hold of Igneous Elemental as well. You'll always benefit from having a source of extra Elemental cards to empower bigger plays later on, after all.
The next time we update this article we'll bring you Mulligan tips on a hero-by-hero basis. We just need to find out how the Un'Goro metagame looks first!
Elemental Mage (Standard) combos and synergies - May 2017
A new expansion always brings new combos to learn. Study this list of card synergies carefully before diving into your first Elemental Mage game:
- Mana Wyrm increases in power for every spell card you play while it's out on the board.
- The following cards are empowered if you played another Elemental on the previous turn: Steam Surger, Tol'vir Stoneshaper, Servant of Kalimos and Blazecaller. Plan your turns very carefully to maximise the value of these minions.
- The cost of every spell in your hand will be reduced by 1 as long as Sorcerer's Apprentice stays out and alive on the board.
- The strength of all your damage-dealing spells is increased by 1 point if Bloodmage Thalnos is out in play.
